So, I’ve been hearing a lot about smudge sticks lately, and I got curious. You know, the idea of cleansing your space, getting rid of negative energy – it sounded pretty cool. So, I decided to give it a try myself. I got myself a bundle of dried sage, the main ingredient in most smudge sticks.
First, I made sure I had everything I needed. I grabbed a lighter and a small ceramic bowl to catch any ash. I also made sure that the room was well-ventilated by opening the windows – safety first. Also, I have a bundle of dried sage which is tightly balled up.

I held the smudge stick at an angle, and lit the end. It took a little bit for it to catch, but once it did, I gently blew out the flame. You just want it to smolder, not burst into flames. Then, the sage bundle started to smoke. This is the smoke you want for smudging.
Next, I started walking around my living room. I focused on the corners, as I had heard that negative energy tends to gather there. Also, I cleansed my hands with the smoke as if I were washing my hands. I let the smoke drift around, imagining it soaking up all the bad vibes, stress, and any general negativity that might be hanging around.
After I finished with the room, I moved on to myself. I drew the smoke over my head, eyes, ears, mouths, and my body. I fanned the smoke over my body, starting from my head and moving down to my feet. I imagined the smoke carrying away any stress or negativity I might be holding onto. Then I took a few deep breaths, just enjoying the earthy scent of the sage and the calm feeling it brought. Also, I reminded myself to think good thoughts, see good actions, hear good sounds, speak good words. As you can imagine, this really helped me center myself and feel more at peace.
When I was done, I carefully put out the smudge stick. I pressed the smoldering end into the ceramic bowl until it stopped smoking. It’s important not to leave it unattended while it’s still lit.
My Thoughts After
- It Smells Good: The smell of burning sage is really pleasant. It’s kind of earthy and calming.
- Feels Relaxing: The whole process felt really relaxing, like a little ritual.
- Clearer Head: I did feel like my mind was a bit clearer afterward. Maybe it was the sage, maybe it was just taking a few minutes to focus on something positive.
Overall, I’d say smudging is worth a try. It’s a simple way to bring a little bit of mindfulness into your day and maybe, just maybe, clear out some of that negative energy. I’m definitely going to do it again.
