So, I’ve been on this Pokmon kick lately, right? Like, I really wanted to get back into it, you know, relive some of that childhood magic. And the first big hurdle, as always, was picking a starter. Man, that’s a tough decision!
First, I booted up my old copy of Pokmon Red. I spent a good chunk of time just staring at that choice screen. Bulbasaur, Charmander, Squirtle… they’re all so cute in their own way. I always used to go for Charmander back in the day, ’cause, well, dragons are cool. But this time, I wanted to try something different.

- Bulbasaur: I mean, who doesn’t love a little plant dinosaur? Plus, that type advantage against the first few gyms seemed pretty solid.
- Charmander: Classic choice, fire lizard, evolves into a dragon. Hard to argue with that, but maybe too obvious for me this time.
- Squirtle: A water turtle that shoots water. Always a strong contender, and Blastoise is a beast.
I did some reading online, just to see what other folks were saying. Seems like Bulbasaur and Squirtle are the “smart” choices, especially for newbies, because their final forms learn some really powerful attacks. Made sense, I guess.
Then I remembered there are other games, too! I dug out my 3DS and popped in Pokmon X. This time, I had Fennekin, Chespin, and Froakie staring back at me. Totally different vibe, but just as tough a choice. After some thought, I decided that I wanted to roll with Fennekin. A fire fox just sounds cool.
But I didn’t stop there! Oh no. I also picked up a copy of Pokmon Violet, and there was another trio waiting for me: Sprigatito, Fuecoco, and Quaxly. I was pretty overwhelmed by this point, so I decided to look up who most people pick in that game. Most folks said Sprigatito was the best of those three, so I went with the little grass cat.
Finally, I decided to try that Pokmon Legends: Arceus game. People kept saying how different it was. I saw that you could pick Cyndaquil, Oshawott, or Rowlet. I went with Cyndaquil, because I saw online that in Hisui, it’s supposed to be the best one.
In the end, I went with Bulbasaur in Red, Fennekin in X, Sprigatito in Violet, and Cyndaquil in Arceus. It felt good to mix things up a bit. And honestly, it made me appreciate each of those little guys even more. Each one has their own strengths and weaknesses, and it’s been fun discovering them all over again.
So yeah, that’s my little Pokmon starter story. It’s been a wild ride so far, and I’m excited to see where these journeys take me. Maybe I’ll even try a Nuzlocke run next… who knows!
