Hey everyone, it’s your boy back at it again, and today we’re diving deep into something that’s been on my mind for a while: Tracy McGrady’s 2K rating. Now, I’ve been a huge T-Mac fan since way back when, and I’ve always felt like the 2K games never quite did him justice. So, I decided to roll up my sleeves and do a little experiment of my own.
First off, I fired up my old copy of NBA 2K11. Why 2K11, you ask? Well, that’s the one where they had the Jordan Challenges, and it just felt right to start there. I scrolled through the rosters, found the ’00-’01 Raptors, and there he was – young Tracy McGrady. His rating? A measly 78 overall. I mean, come on, 2K! This is a guy who would soon become one of the most explosive scorers in the league.

I decided to play a few games with him, just to get a feel for how he handled in the game. And let me tell you, even with that low rating, T-Mac was a beast. I was driving to the hoop, pulling up for jumpers, and even throwing down some nasty dunks. It felt like I was watching old highlights on YouTube, except I was the one controlling the magic.
But I wasn’t satisfied. I wanted to see what T-Mac could really do with a rating that matched his talent. So, I jumped into the player edit mode. This is where things got interesting. I started bumping up his stats, one by one. Shooting, went up. Dunking, definitely up. Ball handling, you bet. I was careful not to go overboard, though. I wanted to keep it realistic, based on what I’d seen from him in real life.
After a good hour of tweaking, I finally settled on a 95 overall rating. Now that felt right. I loaded up another game, and oh boy, it was a whole different ball game. T-Mac was unstoppable. He was blowing past defenders, rising up for shots that seemed impossible, and finishing at the rim with authority.
My Adjustment Process
-
Shooting: I primarily focused on his mid-range and three-point shooting. T-Mac had a smooth stroke, and I wanted the game to reflect that. I ended up putting his mid-range in the low 90s and his three-pointer in the mid-80s.
-
Dunking: This was a no-brainer. T-Mac was one of the most electrifying dunkers of his era. I cranked up his driving dunk to 99 and his standing dunk to the high 80s. It just felt necessary, you know?
-
Ball Handling: T-Mac was more than just a scorer; he was also a great ball-handler. I boosted his ball control and passing accuracy to the high 80s to reflect his ability to create for himself and others. It was pretty fun to do this.
-
Defense: Okay, T-Mac wasn’t known for his defense, but he wasn’t a slouch either. I gave him a slight bump in his steal and block ratings, just to make him a bit more respectable on that end of the court. These are the basic things that I need to try.
It was like playing with a cheat code, but a cheat code based on reality. It made me realize how much potential T-Mac had, and how injuries sadly cut his prime short. This whole experiment was a blast from the past, and it got me thinking about other players who might have been underrated in the 2K games. Maybe I’ll tackle that next. Let me know in the comments who you think deserves a 2K rating boost!
