Okay, so, I’ve been glued to MLB The Show for years, right? And one thing that always gets me is how they handle the roster updates. I mean, the season is long, players get traded, get hot, get cold, you know the drill. So I started digging into how this all works in the game.
First thing I did was fire up the game and started poking around the menus. You gotta find the “Roster Vault” section, that’s where all the custom rosters live. But honestly, I wasn’t too worried about those. I wanted to see how the official rosters were being handled. And guess what i found? MLB The Show’s developers update the game when they see it fit.

So, what did I do next? I started tracking the roster updates. When someone like, say, Evan Phillips becomes the closer for the Dodgers, you see that reflected in the game. Same goes for Kirby Yates taking over for the Braves, or Blake Treinen stepping up for the Dodgers. They actually make these changes! I even noticed John Schreiber being moved to the Red Sox roster as a relief pitcher. It’s pretty cool that they keep it that up-to-date, it makes the game way more realistic.
Then I started thinking, how often do they actually push these updates? After a few updates. I noticed there was some info about daily XP caps, around 15,000 XP or something. It might be related to the updates. Then I found something about them fixing some details on the Cincinnati City Connect jerseys, and some commentary adjustments. But the big takeaway was that there weren’t any “gameplay or live content balance changes.” So, they’re tweaking things, but not messing with the core gameplay too much.
I wanted to see how I could play with friends on different consoles, so I started to test the cross-platform play. It’s there, and it works. You can compete against anyone, no matter what system they’re on. I just went online and started playing, easy as that. And I found something I know for a long time: MLB The Show is not on PC, pity!
But one time, when I was playing a certain mission, the game just failed. It only showed me the location of three mobile antenna points. And the mission told me to protect one of them. I had to fight waves and waves of enemies, until all the lights at the point turned green. It was pretty intense, but I figured out that’s how some missions work in the game.
So yeah, that’s basically my deep dive into the world of MLB The Show roster updates. They do update them, they do it pretty regularly, and it definitely makes the game feel more alive. It’s not perfect, but they’re clearly putting in the work. And to be honest, it’s one of the reasons I keep coming back to this game year after year. It’s just fun to see how they handle the real-world changes in the game, you know?
