So, I got into this whole Takashi Okazaki thing, you know, the guy behind Afro Samurai? I’m not really an artist or anything, but his work is just so cool that I had to try to mess around with his style. Here’s how it went down.
First, I spent hours just looking at his stuff online. I mean, I was totally hooked. There are so many websites out there with his art, it’s crazy. I made a huge folder on my computer and just started saving everything I could find. Pictures, drawings, you name it.

Digging Deep into Research
- Checked out his Instagram. The guy’s got, like, 14K followers! Not a ton of posts, but still gold.
- Found some random website where someone had put together a bunch of his work. That was super helpful.
- Even read a bit about him. Turns out he’s a manga artist and does visual design. Who knew?
Then, I decided to try and draw something in his style. Let me tell you, it’s harder than it looks! I grabbed my sketchbook and started with some basic shapes, trying to copy the way he draws faces and bodies. I spent a good few days just sketching, trying to get the hang of it, It wasn’t easy, but hey, practice makes perfect, right?
After sketching, I tried adding some color. Okazaki uses a lot of bold colors, so I went for it. I picked some bright reds and blacks, just like in Afro Samurai. I slapped those colors on my sketches, just experimenting and seeing what worked. Some of it looked okay, some of it was a total mess, to be honest. But it was fun, and that’s what counts, right?
Honestly, I’m not sure if I’ll ever get close to his level, but it was a blast trying. I learned a lot just by studying his work and trying to copy it. Plus, I’ve got a whole new appreciation for his art now. It’s not just about the cool characters; it’s the whole vibe, you know? If you’re into art, or even if you’re not, you should totally check out Takashi Okazaki. You won’t be disappointed.
And that is all about it. Do what I did, you might enjoy it.
