Alright, let’s talk about my little adventure in The Elder Scrolls Online, specifically about finding and using the Shrine of Mara. It was a bit of a journey, so buckle up.
First off, I had this Pledge of Mara thing. I got it because I bought the Imperial Edition. It was just sitting in my inventory, I found out it’s used for the Ritual of Mara, basically a marriage ceremony in the game. I thought, “Cool, let’s do this!” But first, I needed to find a Shrine of Mara.

So, I started wandering around the major cities. I heard they were usually in the starting cities for each faction. I kept my eyes peeled, but honestly, these shrines are kind of small, and I guess I just overlooked them at first. They’re about the same size as the ones in Skyrim, if you’ve played that.
After a bit of searching, I learned that you can find the icon for the shrine on the map. I opened my map (hit ‘M’ by default) while in a city and looked for an icon that looked like an hourglass. And there it was! I finally found my first Shrine of Mara.
Once I got to the shrine, I had to actually use the Pledge of Mara. I equipped it to my quickslot menu, which was pretty straightforward. Then, with my buddy standing there, I targeted him with the reticule and activated the Pledge of Mara from my quickslot. And boom, we were officially hitched in the game! There were some nice fireworks and a pretty neat animation to celebrate the occasion.
- Step 1: Get the Pledge of Mara.
- Step 2: Find a Shrine of Mara in one of the main cities.
- Step 3: Equip the Pledge of Mara to your quickslot.
- Step 4: Target your partner and activate the Pledge.
Oh, and I found out that after you do the Ritual of Mara, you get these Rings of Mara. They give you an experience bonus when you’re grouped up and in the same area as your partner. It’s a nice little perk for playing together, we immediately went on to adventure together.
It was a fun little side quest, and it’s a cool way to connect with other players in the game. If you’ve got a friend you play with regularly, it’s definitely worth doing. Just remember to actually look at your map to find the shrine, unlike me who spent hours running around like a headless chicken at first.
Important Note
If you and your friend ever decide to unhitch, there’s not any special way to do it, just keep those Rings of Mara to yourself and do whatever you need to do. Maybe that’s why I see some players just storing them in the bank, I can’t say for sure.
