So, I finally decided to take the plunge and ditch my cable. I kept hearing people say, “Cutting the cord is way cheaper than cable if you do it right.” Well, I wanted to see if that was true.
First, I did a little digging around. Seems like pretty much everyone says it’s simpler than ever to get rid of cable in 2024. Most folks can apparently get what they want for less than what they’re paying for cable TV. But, I also saw some warnings. To cut the cord, you gotta be okay with using some new tech, which, in many ways, is different from the cable. Plus, you might have to say goodbye to some of those channels you’re used to.

I started by figuring out what I actually watched. Turns out, I wasn’t using half the channels I was paying for. That was a real eye-opener.
Next, I looked into streaming services. There are so many out there, it’s kinda overwhelming. I made a list of the ones that had the shows and movies I liked. I even tried out some free trials. A good way to figure out what worked for me without any initial commitment, that’s for sure!
Then there was the whole internet situation. I needed to make sure my connection was good enough for streaming. I called up my internet provider and bumped up my speed. Didn’t want any buffering nightmares, you know?
I also had to think about how I was going to watch stuff on my TV. I already had a smart TV, which was a good start, but I got a streaming device, too. You can find a bunch of them online, especially on eBay! I got a great deal on a used one, saved a good chunk of change there, which is always a plus in my book.
Setting everything up was a bit of a learning curve. Connecting the device, downloading apps, signing in… it took a little time. But I got the hang of it, and there’s a ton of guides online if you ever get stuck.
Now, I’m fully cable-free. And guess what? My monthly bill is way lower! I’m actually watching more of what I like and less of what I don’t. I have also given up some cable channels that I seldom watch, and I don’t mind it now.
Here’s a quick rundown of what I did:
- Figured out what I actually watched.
- Checked out different streaming services.
- Made sure my internet was fast enough.
- Got a streaming device.
- Set everything up and learned how to use it.
It wasn’t all smooth sailing, but it was definitely worth it. I’m saving money, and I’m happier with my TV setup. If you’re thinking about cutting the cord, I say go for it! It is a bit of work, but it can be very easy to do, and you can save a lot of money for what you really want.
