Okay, so, I’ve been messing around with FIFA 23 a lot lately, specifically Ultimate Team. You know, trying to build that dream squad and all. And man, let me tell you, it’s a grind. But it’s also a ton of fun, figuring out the best way to set up your team to dominate.
I started off just throwing players together, not really thinking about it. I thought, “Hey, I’ve got some good players, that should be enough, right?” Wrong. I was getting stomped. My defense was all over the place, and my attacks were just fizzling out. It was a mess.

So I started doing some digging, reading up on what other folks were doing. I watched some streamers, you know, the guys who are actually good at this game. And it turns out, formations and custom tactics are a huge deal.
I experimented with a few different formations. The 4-4-2 was okay, but I felt like I was missing something in the midfield. 4-3-3 was fun, lots of attacking power, but I kept getting caught on the counter.
Then I tried the 4-2-3-1. And wow, what a difference. Suddenly, my team felt solid. I had two defensive midfielders to shield my back four, which was great. And then the three attacking midfielders could really push forward and create chances.
But it wasn’t just the formation. I started messing around with the custom tactics, too. Initially, I didn’t even touch those settings. I figured the default ones were probably fine. But boy, was I wrong.
I started playing around with the defensive style, setting it to “Pressure on Heavy Touch.” That made a big difference. My players were way more aggressive, winning the ball back higher up the pitch. I also played around with the depth and width of my defense, trying to find that sweet spot where I wasn’t too exposed but also not sitting too deep.
On the attack, I tried a few different build-up play styles. “Slow Build Up” was okay, but I found “Fast Build Up” to be way more effective. It just suited my style of play better, I guess. I like to get the ball forward quickly and try to catch the other team off guard.
And then there are the player instructions. Man, those are a game-changer. You can tell each player exactly what you want them to do. Want your full-backs to stay back while attacking? You can do that. Want one of your defensive midfielders to join the attack? You can do that, too.
I spent hours just tweaking these settings, trying to find the perfect combination. I’d play a few games, see how it felt, and then go back and make adjustments. It was a lot of trial and error, but it was also really satisfying when I finally started to see results.
Now, I’m not saying I’m some FIFA god or anything. I still lose games. But my team feels so much better now. I’m actually winning consistently, and I’m having way more fun playing the game. I found that the 5-1-2-2 formation is also very good. It’s a little bit risky since there is only one defensive midfielder, but it’s so much fun to play with 5 attacking players.
Here are some tips that worked for me:

- Don’t be afraid to experiment. Try different formations, different tactics, different player instructions. See what works for you.
- Pay attention to your players’ work rates. It determines how your players will act on the field.
- Watch good players and see what they’re doing. You can learn a lot from watching how the pros play.
- Be patient. It takes time to master this stuff. Don’t get discouraged if you don’t see results immediately.
So yeah, that’s my FIFA 23 Ultimate Team journey so far. It’s been a lot of fun, and I’m still learning new things every day. If you’re struggling in Ultimate Team, I highly recommend taking some time to really dive into the formations and custom tactics. It can make a world of difference.
