Alright, so I’ve been having this issue with Sea of Thieves. It’s been taking forever to load lately. I mean, we’re talking coffee-break long, stare-out-the-window long, maybe-I-should-mow-the-lawn long.
So, I started poking around. First thing I did was check my setup. I’m still running the game on an old HDD, and yeah, I know, SSD is the way to go these days. The game files are getting pretty chunky, and a slow hard drive isn’t helping. The first time I booted up the game after moving it to my HDD, it took a good 20 minutes to load. I’m not kidding! I clicked “play” and waited. And waited. And waited some more. It felt like ages before I finally got into the main menu.
But it wasn’t just the initial load. Even getting onto a server was a pain. Textures, NPCs, even my own ship’s wheel and capstan were taking their sweet time to pop in. I’d be standing on the deck of a ghost ship for a minute or two before everything finally appeared. Super weird, and definitely not immersive.
I tried a few things, like resetting the game. Figured it might help to go back to default settings. That didn’t really do much. I even kept an eye on the official channels, thinking maybe it was a server-side issue. Saw some chatter about matchmaking problems, but nothing concrete about these crazy load times.
Then I heard from a buddy, he said after the last update, he noticed the same thing on his PC. He’s on an SSD and I’m on HDD. Load times shot up to like 10 minutes for him sometimes. That made me think, maybe it’s not just my old hard drive.
So, I’m still not 100% sure what’s going on. It could be the HDD struggling with the game’s size, could be something with the latest update, or maybe a bit of both. I’m gonna keep digging around. Maybe an SSD upgrade is in my future after all. Will keep you posted!
