Today, I wanna talk about my go-to when building a team – Hydreigon. Yeah, that three-headed beast that looks like it could eat a tank for breakfast. I’ve been messing around with this guy for a while now, and I think I’ve finally cracked the code on making it truly shine.
So, first things first, I started with Movesets. This thing has a buffet of charged attacks, but which ones are worth your time? After tons of battles, I found that the best way is to go all-in on the dark stuff. I slapped Dark Pulse on it because, you know, STAB (Same-type attack bonus) is a thing. Plus, 80 base damage? Yes, please. Then I remembered that Hydreigon could learn Brutal Swing, I mean, who doesn’t like a move called “Brutal Swing”? It’s a Dark-type move, and it absolutely wrecks. But here’s the catch, it’s a legacy move, so if you didn’t get it back in the day, you’re kinda out of luck. Unless you got a buddy who’s willing to trade, of course.

Fast Attacks: Bite or Dragon Breath?
Next up, the fast attacks. I went back and forth on this one. Bite and Dragon Breath – both get STAB, and their stats are practically identical. In the end, I rolled with Bite. Why? It just felt faster, you know? Like, I could spam it more, and in my experience, that’s what you want with Hydreigon. You want to be dishing out those charged attacks as often as possible.
Teammates: Finding the Perfect Partner
Alright, let’s talk teammates. After losing a bunch of matches, I realized Hydreigon needs a buddy, a wingman, a…you get the idea. I tried a few different combos, but nothing really clicked until I stumbled upon Aegislash. This sword-and-shield dude is the peanut butter to Hydreigon’s jelly. They cover each other’s weaknesses like they were made for each other. Plus, Aegislash can force switches, which sets Hydreigon up to come in and clean house. Other good choices are Rotom-W/H, Venusaur-M, Greninja and Talonflame.
The Strategy: Sub and Destroy
Now, for the actual strategy. I found that one of the best things to do is to use Substitute. I started throwing Substitute on Hydreigon, and suddenly, things started to click. It’s like a shield that eats up attacks from those annoying revenge killers like Iron Valiant and Zamazenta. Plus, it blocks status effects from those stall-y Pokemon like Galarian Slowking and Garganacl, which is a lifesaver.
The basic idea is simple: Get Hydreigon in, pop a Substitute, and start blasting away with those Dark-type moves. If they switch, great. Your Substitute will probably tank the hit, and you can switch to a counter. If they don’t, well, they’re gonna eat a Dark Pulse or a Brutal Swing. Either way, you’re coming out on top.
Wrapping Up
- Dark Pulse and Brutal Swing for maximum damage.
- Bite for the fast attack – it just feels better.
- Aegislash is your best friend – seriously, try it.
- Substitute is your secret weapon – use it wisely.
So yeah, that’s my take on the best moveset for Hydreigon. It took a lot of trial and error, a lot of rage quits, and probably a few broken controllers, but I think I finally figured out how to make this beast work. Give it a shot, and let me know what you think. Trust me, once you see Hydreigon sweeping through teams, you’ll never go back. If you got this far, thanks for reading my ramblings, and happy battling!
