Okay, so I wanted to play Fortnite today, and I’ve been messing around with this for a few hours now. When I tried to launch the game, it got stuck on “checking for updates” forever.
At first, I figured it might be my internet. It’s been acting up lately. So, the first thing I did was reset my router. You know the drill – unplug it, wait a bit, then plug it back in. After the router rebooted, I waited a few minutes, then tried to launch Fortnite again. Nope, still stuck. I checked if I could load other online games or websites, and they all worked fine, so it wasn’t my internet after all.

Next, since I’m on console, I decided to completely power down my console. I mean, a full shutdown, not just rest mode. I turned it off, waited until it was completely off, and then unplugged the power cable. While it was still unplugged, I pressed and held the power button for a few seconds to completely discharge it. Then, I plugged the power cable back in and turned the console on. Here’s the important part: when I went to launch Fortnite, I didn’t touch any buttons until the update prompt appeared. Lo and behold, it started updating successfully!
Before I tried the console restart, I also checked the Epic Games app on my phone, but I had already installed the newest version. I do remember that the Epic Games app can be used to update the game, so I might have tried that next if the console restart hadn’t worked.

What I tried:
- Tried resetting my router.
- Checked if other online games or websites were working.
- Fully powered down my console, unplugged it, and held the power button.
- Restarted the console and launched Fortnite without pressing any buttons during the update prompt.
- Checked for updates through the Epic Games app on my phone.
Anyway, the update took a while because my internet isn’t the fastest, but it finally finished. Now I can finally play! It was a real pain to deal with, but hopefully, this helps someone else out there who’s stuck staring at the “checking for updates” screen.
