So, I’ve always been a huge fan of Pokémon, and like many of us, I have a soft spot for Dragonite. It’s just such a cool Pokémon, right? Powerful, majestic, and let’s be honest, who wouldn’t want a dragon friend? Anyway, I got to thinking the other day, “I wonder how much Dragonite cards are actually worth?” It seemed like a fun little project to dive into, so I did just that.
First, I started browsing online, just to get a general idea. I found out that Dragonite cards have been around for a while, in at least 17 different sets! Can you believe that? Seventeen! Some of these are super old, like the Team Rocket set from back in the day. Apparently, the Team Rocket’s Dark Dragonite is pretty sought after.

I then started digging into specific cards and their prices. It was a bit of a wild ride, to be honest. The prices are all over the place! I saw some Dragonite cards going for as little as $1.29. That’s like, less than a cup of coffee! But then, on the other end of the spectrum, some cards were listed for over $350! That’s insane, right? It really blew my mind how much the price can vary.
I learned that the average value of a Dragonite Pokemon card is around $29.51. That’s not too shabby, but it’s definitely in the middle of those crazy high and low prices I found. It seems like a lot of the older, vintage cards are the ones that really hold their value. And there’s this one card, the Dragonite V, that’s apparently become super popular and expensive because of something called “Alternate Arts” from the newer Sword & Shield era. I’m not totally sure what that means, but it sounds fancy!
Then I kind of went down this rabbit hole reading about Dragonite in the games and the anime. I learned that in Pokémon Yellow, Dragonite is super hard to catch, with a catch rate of only 9. And it gets a ton of experience points when you battle with it, which explains why it’s such a powerhouse. I also found out that in this one region called Fiore, Pokémon Rangers use Dragonite like a bus service! They call it the “Dragonite Bus.” How cool is that? It seems Dragonite is pretty rare in the wild, which probably adds to its value, both in the games and in the card game.
Here’s a little summary of what I found:
- Lots of Sets: Dragonite has cards in at least 17 different sets.
- Price Range: Prices go from $1.29 to a whopping $353.96.
- Average Price: The average price for a Dragonite card is around $29.51.
- Vintage is Valuable: Older cards tend to be worth more.
- Rare in the Wild: Dragonite is rare in the wild, which probably makes it more valuable.
- The Dragonite Bus: Rangers use Dragonite as a flying bus service in Fiore!
So yeah, that was my little adventure into the world of Dragonite card values. It was definitely more complicated than I initially thought, but it was super interesting to learn about all the different factors that go into pricing these cards. It just goes to show that even something as simple as a trading card can have a whole history and economy behind it. It also made me appreciate my own Dragonite cards a little bit more, even if they’re not worth hundreds of dollars!
