This darn thing, this football game, my grandson plays it all the time. He’s always hollerin’ about these TOTW players. What in tarnation is that? Sounds like some kinda food to me. TOTW, team of the week, I reckon. He gets so excited, jumpin’ around like a June bug. Says he needs these players for his team, his “Ultimate Team” he calls it. Lord almighty, it’s all a mystery to me.
He says, “Grandma, I gotta get these TOTW players, they’re the best!” Best at what, I ask ya? Best at runnin’ around on a screen? Back in my day, best meant somethin’ else. Best meant winnin’ the pie contest at the county fair, or havin’ the fattest hog at the market. These young’uns and their games.

What is this TOTW?
Well, from what that boy tells me, every week, they pick the best players from all over. Like pickin’ the best apples from the orchard. These players, they get special cards, TOTW cards, he calls ’em. And these cards make ’em better in the game. Stronger, faster, like feedin’ a chicken extra corn.
He’s always talkin’ about “chemistry” and “attributes”. Sounds like he’s in school learnin’ about potions and such. It’s all mumbo jumbo to me. All I know is, he spends hours on that game, tryin’ to get these TOTW players. Says he needs ’em to win. Win what, I don’t know. There ain’t no trophy for this game, far as I can tell.
How to get these TOTW players?
Now, he says there are different ways to get them players. One way is openin’ “packs”. It’s like openin’ a Christmas present, you never know what you’re gonna get. Sometimes you get somethin’ good, sometimes it’s just socks. He says most of the time, you just get players you don’t want, like gettin’ a bucket full of rotten apples. He tells me it’s all about luck, like pullin’ the winnin’ ticket in the church raffle. It’s all down to how lucky you are, how lucky you can be.
- Openin’ those packs
- Some kind of tasks he does, “objectives” he calls ’em
- Some weeks good players, some weeks bad players.
He also says there are these “objectives”. Sounds like chores to me. You gotta do certain things in the game to get these players. Like earnin’ your keep on the farm. You gotta work for it, ain’t nothin’ free in this world, I always told him that. He spends a lot of time playin’ and workin’ to get those players in his team.
Why is he so excited about TOTW?
He’s always sayin’ how these TOTW players are better than the regular ones. They run faster, they shoot harder, they’re just all-around better. It’s like the difference between a regular mule and a prize-winnin’ racehorse. He gets real excited when he gets a good one, like he’s found a gold nugget in the creek.
He’s always tryin’ to tell me about his team, showin’ me the players on the screen. They all look the same to me, just little men runnin’ around. But he knows ’em all by name, knows all their stats, whatever that means. He says that he has to look at each player’s skill moves and their work rates before gettin’ one. I don’t know what those things mean. He just said it’s important for a good player.
So many players, which one is good?
There are so many players in this game, it makes my head spin. It’s like tryin’ to count all the chickens in the coop. And every week, there are new TOTW players. It’s never endin’, like the weeds in my garden.
I don’t understand it, but it makes him happy. And that’s all that matters, I reckon. As long as he’s not gettin’ into trouble, and he’s happy, that’s good enough for me. But I still think he should spend more time outside, gettin’ some fresh air and sunshine. There’s more to life than these TOTW players, you know. There’s family, there’s friends, there’s the real world out there. But what do I know? I’m just an old woman who doesn’t understand these newfangled games. But all I know is that my grandson loves it, and he’s always talkin’ about these TOTW players. I reckon they must be somethin’ special, even if I don’t understand why.
My grandson told me that this week there is a TOTW Surge Evolution. He said this can make the player better. He needs to do some tasks in his game to make the player better and better. He said it’s an “EVO”, whatever it means. All I know is that he’s excited, and he told me that he can make some TOTW players stronger. I don’t understand, but he’s happy, and that is what really matters.
He told me that he only can look at the player’s passing stats. I think that means how the player passes the ball. And the PlayStyles, I don’t know what it is. He also mentioned that some TOTW players are expensive. He said he doesn’t have enough “coins”, which is the money in his game. It’s like real life, right? Good things always cost a lot.

These games, these TOTW players, it’s all a different world. A world I don’t understand, but a world that makes my grandson happy. And that’s all that really matters, ain’t it?
