This damn NBA 2k controls on PS4, it is so hard to learn. My grandson, he plays it all day long. I asked him how to play it, but he told me I’m too old to learn. I will show him!
First, you gotta hold that R2 button. That’s what the young folks say. You hold it down, and it makes your player run faster. Like chasing a chicken in the yard, you gotta be quick!

Basic Movement
Now, moving around, that ain’t too hard. You use that left stick, the one that looks like a little mushroom. Push it up, your player goes up. Push it down, he goes down. Left and right, same thing. Just like walking to the outhouse, ain’t no big mystery there.
When you want to do a little jump, you gotta use the square button. Just like jumping over the ditch on the way to town. My grandson, he tells me it is called “shooting.”
Defense
Now, this is where it gets tricky. They say you gotta play “defense.” Like putting up a fence around your garden to keep the rabbits out.
- L2 button, that’s your friend on defense. Hold that down when you’re close to the other guy, and it makes your player stick to him like glue.
- If you want to steal the ball, that is like snatching a pie from the windowsill. Gotta be quick! You use that square button again. But be careful, or you might get called for a “foul.” I get called for enough of those already when I play cards with Mildred.
When the other guy is trying to shoot the ball, you gotta try to block it. This here is like trying to swat a fly with a newspaper. It ain’t easy. They say you use the triangle button for that. You gotta time it just right, or you’ll miss. Just like those darn flies.
Offense, What is That?
They say “offense” is when you have the ball. Well, ain’t that something. Like having a fresh batch of cookies, you gotta know what to do with them.
- Passing the ball, that’s like sharing those cookies. You use the X button for that. There are different ways to pass, like a bounce pass which is just like bouncing a ball to a dog, or an overhead pass which is like tossing a chicken over the fence. But the X button will do for now.
- Dribbling, that’s what they call bouncing the ball. Now, my grandson, he can do all sorts of fancy tricks. Bouncing it between his legs, behind his back. Reminds me of a trained monkey at the circus. For us regular folks, just keep bouncing the ball with that right stick, and try not to let the other team steal it.
Shooting
This is the main part of the game for me. Getting that ball in the basket. It’s like trying to throw a horseshoe and get a ringer.
When you’re close to the basket, you just hold that square button and let go when you think it’s right. They have some fancy meter thing that shows you when to release, but I just go by feel. Like knowing when the bread is done in the oven, you just know.
If you’re far away, it’s harder. Like trying to hit a tin can with a rock from across the field. You still use the square button, but you gotta hold it longer. Just practice and you’ll get the hang of it. I still can’t do it, but I will learn. That grandson of mine will not think I am a useless old lady.
Other Stuff
There’s a whole bunch of other buttons on this PS4 controller. They do all sorts of things. Call a timeout, that’s like taking a breather during a long day of work. Pause the game, that is like when you need to stop and take a sip of water. But I don’t use those buttons much.
This NBA 2K, it’s a complicated game. Lots of rules, lots of buttons. But I’m learning. Slowly but surely. Just like I learned to use that newfangled washing machine. Took a while, but now I wouldn’t trade it for the world.

So, if you’re like me, and you’re trying to figure out these 2k controls on PS4, don’t give up. Just keep practicing. And if you see my grandson, tell him his grandma is getting good at this game. He won’t believe it, but it will be fun to see his face when I beat him!
