Well, let me tell you about this FIFA 23 thing, seems like all the young folks are talking about it. And there’s this fella, Van Basten, who’s a big shot in that game, I reckon. Heard my grandson going on and on about it, something about a card, like those baseball cards, but digital, you know?
This Van Basten, they say he’s a “striker,” whatever that means. Sounds like someone who likes to hit things. In my day, we just kicked the ball, none of this fancy striker business. But, these kids, they love all these newfangled terms. He’s from the Netherlands, ain’t that where they got all them windmills? Must be windy there, makes you good at kicking, maybe.
They say he’s in this thing called “Icons,” sounds important. Like one of them pictures of saints we used to hang on the wall, only it’s about football players. Times sure have changed. Back in my day, the only icon we had was old Mrs. Henderson’s prize-winning rooster, and he sure didn’t play no football.
Now, this Van Basten FIFA 23 card, it’s got numbers and all. One of ’em is 91, another’s 93, like grades in school, I guess. Seems like 93 is better, like getting an A instead of a B. My grandson, bless his heart, he tries to explain it to me, but it’s all Greek to me. Just a bunch of numbers and letters, like alphabet soup.
They talk about this fella being tall, 188cm, which sounds like a lot. He’s a big’un, I suppose, good for kicking that ball far, I imagine. Like 6’2″ he must be able to see over everybody. In my day we didn’t use centimeters, it was always feet and inches, simple as that. But those kids and their new-fangled ways.

And something about “Trophy Titans,” sounds like a movie title. Maybe this Van Basten is in a movie too? Or maybe it’s just another one of them fancy names they give things in this FIFA 23 game. It’s all too much for an old woman like me to keep up with.
Then there’s this “Catalyst” and “Engine” stuff. Sounds like car parts. Are they putting car parts in these football players now? Makes no sense. Maybe it’s to make him run faster, like putting a bigger engine in your car. They say it makes him “agile” and “nimble.” Like that Jack Be Nimble fella in the nursery rhyme, jumpin’ over candlesticks.
So, this Van Basten in FIFA, he’s like a souped-up car, I guess. Fast and agile, jumpin’ around, kickin’ that ball all over the place. It’s all beyond me. I just like to watch a good game of football, none of this card business. But the kids love it, and who am I to say they shouldn’t?
They say this game is made by EA Sports. Sounds like a bunch of letters to me. But if it makes the young’uns happy, then I suppose it’s alright. They need something to do to keep ’em out of trouble, and if it’s this FIFA 23 Van Basten thing, then so be it.
I reckon if you are looking for someone who knows how to kick a ball good, then this Van Basten is your man. That is what they are saying. I mean, I never saw him play, but he must be somethin’ special for them to put him on a card and call him an Icon.
All these Van Basten FIFA cards and numbers and whatnot, it’s just a big fuss if you ask me. I am sure this game is a lot of fun, though. Maybe I will ask my grandson to show me how to play this FIFA game. Then again, maybe not. It looks complicated.
Anyway, this whole FIFA 23 and Van Basten thing is all the rage these days. Kids love it, and that’s what matters. Us old folks might not understand it, but as long as they’re having fun, that’s all that counts. Now, where did I put my knitting needles…?
