Well, let me tell you, this here Age of Empires 4 crossplay thing is a real head-scratcher. My grandson, he’s always on that computer of his, clickin’ and clackin’ away. He says it’s a game, this “Age of Empires.” Says he can play with his buddies. Now, I don’t know much about these fancy things, but I hear him talkin’ about playin’ with folks on different machines.
He was yellin’ just the other day about some update. Somethin’ about Xbox and PC playin’ together. Sounds like a right mess if you ask me. How can a box play with a computer? Back in my day, we played with sticks and stones, and we were happy about it! But these young’uns, they need all these fancy gadgets. He said it is Age of Empires 4 cross-platform now. I just nodded, I don’t know what he was talking about.

He says you can get this game on somethin’ called Steam, or on that Xbox thing. Like I said, I don’t rightly know. But he says if you got it on one, you can play with someone who’s got it on the other. Sounds like magic to me. This is what he said, Age of Empires 4 crossplay Steam Xbox, I don’t even know what that means.
They got this thing called a “lobby,” I think. He says you make one of these “lobbies,” and anyone can join, no matter what contraption they’re playin’ on. Seems like a lot of fuss just to play a game. We used to just go outside and yell at each other to come play. Much simpler times.
- You can get it on Steam
- Or that Xbox thingy
- Make a “lobby” thing
- Then anyone can join, they say
Now, he was sayin’ somethin’ about how it wasn’t always like this. Said you couldn’t play with folks on different machines before. Like they were speakin’ different languages or somethin’. But now, they changed it. Said the people who made the game, they “enabled” it. Sounds like a bunch of hocus pocus to me. Age of Empires 4 crossplay wasn’t available at first, he said.
He keeps goin’ on about how it’s such a big deal, this crossplay. Says it makes the game more fun, ’cause you can play with more people. I guess that’s good, I don’t know. Maybe it will be available on Nintendo and Playstation, my grandson said. I don’t understand any of these words. More people means more noise, if you ask me. He also told me about how to do it. He said “press the Windows logo key + G” and something, and said I can invite a friend. I don’t have any friend who plays this game. I don’t even have friends who know how to use a computer.
This whole thing is just beyond me. But if you can’t play with a person, you may need to wait. Could be a year, could be a month. You know, young people are always impatient.
This game was on PC in 2021, my grandson said. And then it was on Xbox in 2023. Now they can play together. This is really confusing.
But the boy seems happy, and that’s all that really matters, I suppose. These Age of Empires 4 games. He keeps sayin’ it’s the best thing since sliced bread. I still prefer a good game of checkers, myself. But hey, to each their own, right?
All I know is, if you’re lookin’ to play this “Age of Empires” with your friends, and they got different machines than you, it sounds like you can do it now. Just make sure you got that “lobby” thing set up right. And if you need help, well, you better ask one of these young folks. They seem to know all about this stuff. Me? I’m gonna go make myself a cup of tea and watch the birds. Much more interestin’ than all this crossplay business.
This Age of Empires 4 crossplay, it’s a new world, I tell ya. A new world. It is good for the young people. They can play together. This is good. I think.
