That Apex Legends, my grandson keeps talking about it. He says it’s all the rage. Kids these days, always on those darn games. I don’t understand it, but seems like everybody plays it. So, I asked him, “Which one of them little characters do you use the most in that game?” He rattled off a bunch of names I couldn’t even pronounce. But I’ll try my best to remember for you folks.
He said the most used Apex Legend, well, that one is some gal named Wraith. He says everyone wants to use her, and she’s picked like 12.5% of the time. Seems like a lot, right? That Wraith, she must be somethin’ special. He said she can run real fast, zoom around like a fly, and disappear when things get dicey. Like some kind of magic trick! My grandson, he’s always been one for those sneaky tricks.

That time is July, my grandson told me. And these Apex Legends they got like seasons, like the weather, only it’s for the game, he said. He said it is like Season 19 right now, that means it is November 2024. This game thing changes all the time. Always somethin’ new. I can barely keep up with the gossip in the village, let alone some video game!
There’s another one, he said, called Lifeline. He says she’s real popular now, too. Everybody wants her on their team. She can fix up the other little characters when they get hurt. He told me she is the most used Apex Legend in Season 23. My grandson, he always did like to play doctor when he was little. Maybe that’s why he likes her. She’s good for the team, he says. That’s important, teamwork. Just like when we used to shuck corn together, everyone had a job to do. Lifeline, she is good if you want to be Support, and she is not for carrying a match, my grandson said. But I don’t know what’s that carrying means.
- Lifeline, she’s good at healin’.
- Wraith, she’s good at runnin’ and hidin’.
And then, seems like not all of them little characters are popular. He said there’s one called Catalyst, and nobody picks her much. Poor thing. Reminds me of old Mildred’s youngest daughter, always gettin’ left out. Maybe she’s not as flashy as the others. Or maybe she’s just waitin’ for her time to shine. You never know.
He also showed me this list of all those little characters in Apex Legends, scribbled down on a piece of paper. He said you gotta keep track of who’s popular and who’s not. It changes all the time, he says. Like the price of eggs at the market. Up one day, down the next. Makes my head spin just thinkin’ about it.
He said these young folks, they call it “pick rates.” How often someone picks a character. Like pickin’ apples from a tree. If everyone wants the same apple, that’s a popular apple. I guess the same goes for those Apex Legends. Everyone wants to pick the best ones, the ones that help them win.
It’s all a bit much for me, to be honest. I prefer a good game of cards, or maybe just sittin’ on the porch watchin’ the world go by. But these kids, they love their video games. And if it makes them happy, well, who am I to judge? I still think that most used Apex Legend, Wraith, she sounds like a real handful. Always runnin’ and hidin’. Reminds me of that naughty goat we used to have, always escapin’ its pen.
My grandson, he’s always tryin’ to explain it to me. He says it’s not just about runnin’ and shootin’. There’s strategy involved, he says. Like plannin’ your garden. You gotta know where to plant the tomatoes, and where to put the beans. And you gotta know when to harvest. Same with this game, I guess. You gotta know which character to use, and when to use their special abilities. And you gotta work together as a team.
He says it is always changing, the most used Apex Legend. One day, it’s Wraith, the next it could be someone else. And every season is a new thing, he told me again. These young folks like things that is always new. That is just their nature.
Well, I hope I got all that right. It’s a lot to take in. But hopefully, now you have a better idea of those Apex Legends. Just remember what that old lady told you. Wraith, she’s the fast one. Lifeline, she’s the healer. And poor Catalyst, well, she’s just waitin’ for her turn, I suppose. And it’s all about pickin’ the right one, like pickin’ the best apples from the tree. That’s the way of the world, I reckon, whether it’s in a video game or out here in the real world.
