You see, this game, what’s it called, Valorant, my grandson plays it all the time. He keeps talking about this “dd triangle” thing. Sounds like some kinda shape, right? I asked him, “What’s this dd triangle you keep yapping about?” He just rolled his eyes. Kids these days! But he showed me the game, and now I kinda get it.
It ain’t about real triangles, like the ones on my quilt. It’s about how much damage you do and how much you take. Some folks call it “Delta Damage Per Round.” Sounds fancy, but it’s just simple math. Like, if you hit someone for 100, and they hit you for 50, you’re doing better, right? That’s the dd triangle thing, I reckon.

- You shoot the other fellers.
- They shoot you back.
- Whoever shoots more wins.
This dd triangle Valorant thing, it’s like keeping score. You want that number to be big. Means you’re shooting more than you’re getting shot. My grandson, he’s always yelling about his dd triangle. Says he’s “cracked” or something. I don’t know what that means, but he seems happy when that triangle number is high.
He showed me this screen with all these little triangles. It’s like a patch in my quilt. And they change colors, too! Red, yellow, green… all sorts. I think the green ones are good. He gets excited when he sees green. This Valorant game has all kinds of characters to play. He calls them agents. Some are good for shooting, some are good for other things.
There are these maps, too. Places where they do all the shooting. One’s called “Split,” I think. Lots of ropes to slide on in Valorant, like we used to have in the barn. That Split map, it’s good for the folks defending, my grandson says. Kinda like how we used to guard our chickens from the foxes.
He showed me one of them agents called Raze. That one seems to be good at shooting. Also one called Gekko. They all have different things they do. It’s all a bit much for me, but the young folks seem to love it.
Now, my grandson, he’s always on that computer. He says there are tips and tricks for this Valorant game. He’s always looking at that little map in the corner, the minimap. Says it helps him see where everyone is. Like when I look out the window to see where the cows are. You gotta keep your eyes open, he says.
He’s part of some group online, some “subreddit,” he calls it. They all talk about these Valorant tips and tricks. They talk about crosshairs, I don’t know what that is, and being “thrifty.” I always taught him to be thrifty, save your money! But in this game, it means something else. They also talk about going “offline” in Valorant, so nobody bothers you, I guess. Like hanging a “Do Not Disturb” sign on your door.
He showed me his “purchase history.” He buys things in this game! Skins, he calls them. Makes his guns look different. I told him, “Boy, you’re spending real money on pretend things?” He just shrugged. Kids these days! These are all about this dd triangle Valorant stuff.
This whole dd triangle Valorant thing, it’s a lot to take in. But I guess it’s about doing more damage than you take. Like winning a tug-of-war. You gotta pull harder than the other team. And those little colored triangles, they just show you how you’re doing. A lot of things to learn in this game. My grandson is always learning new things about it.
I still don’t understand all of it. But I try to listen when he talks about it. It’s important to him, so I try to care. He’s a good boy, even if he spends too much time on that computer playing that Valorant game. And that dd triangle, well, it’s just a way of keeping score, I guess. Like counting your chickens at the end of the day. You want more chickens than you started with, right? Same idea, I reckon.
You gotta look at your minimap in Valorant, they say. And you have to check your hours. There’s a lot you can do to be good at this game, my grandson says. Even if you’re new, you can learn all these tips and tricks. Just gotta pay attention, I suppose. That’s what I always say. Pay attention, and you’ll do alright. Even in that Valorant game with all the dd triangles.

There’s a lot of people online who know a lot about this dd triangle Valorant stuff. My grandson is always reading what they say. They share all kinds of information, tips and whatnot. It’s like a big community, he says. Like our town, but online.
The point is to keep that dd triangle number high. That’s what all the kids are saying. And to fill up that badge with those colored triangles. It’s a whole thing. But as long as he’s happy, I guess that’s all that matters. It’s just a game, after all. Like playing marbles in the dirt. But with computers and triangles and a whole lot of shooting.
