Alright, listen up, y’all. Gonna tell ya ’bout them NBA 2k controls on that PS4 thingy. My grandson, he’s always playin’ this game, so I picked up a thing or two watchin’ him yell at the TV.
First things first, movin’ around. That there left stick, that’s how your fella walks around the court. Push it up, he goes forward. Push it down, he goes backward. Left and right, you get the picture. Ain’t rocket science, even this old lady can figure that out.

Now, for shootin’ the ball, that’s where it gets a bit tricky. You see that square button? That’s your shoot button. Just tap it, and your guy will shoot. But hold it down too long, and he’ll probably throw up a brick. Gotta get the timing just right, you know? Like bakin’ a good pie, gotta know when it’s ready.
And then there’s passin’ the ball. That’s that there X button. Tap it, and your guy will pass to the nearest teammate. Hold it down, and you can pick who you wanna pass to. See that little circle under your players? That’s who you’re gonna pass to. Just point that left stick at the right fella and let go of the X button. Easy peasy.
- Shootin’: Square button – tap for a regular shot, hold for a jump shot. Timing is key!
- Passin’: X button – tap for a quick pass, hold to aim at a specific teammate. Look for the circle under their feet!
- Movin’: Left stick – push in the direction you wanna go. Simple as that.
Now, for some fancy stuff. My grandson, he’s always doin’ these crossovers and spins. Makes my head spin just watchin’ him. That right stick, that’s the key. Twirl it around, and your guy will do some fancy dribblin’. But be careful, you do it too much, and you’ll lose the ball. Just like in life, too much fancy stuff ain’t always good.
And then there’s defense. You gotta stop them other fellas from scorin’, right? That L2 button, that’s your best friend on defense. Hold it down, and your guy will get in a good defensive stance. Then you use that left stick to stay in front of your opponent. And if you wanna steal the ball, that’s the square button. But time it wrong, and you’ll get a foul. Don’t want none of that.
Runnin’ fast is important too, you know. Gotta get up and down that court quick. That R2 button, that’s your sprint button. Hold it down, and your guy will take off like a scalded dog. But don’t go runnin’ around like a chicken with its head cut off. Gotta use it smart, or you’ll run outta energy.
My grandson told me about this thing called “off-ball movement”. Sounds fancy, huh? Basically, it means movin’ around without the ball. Try tappin’ that R2 button when you ain’t got the ball. Your guy will do a quick little burst of speed, tryin’ to get open. Smart players do that a lot, or so my grandson tells me.
And when you’re close to someone on the outside, near that three-point line they call the “perimeter”, you hold down that L2 button. It helps you stay in front of ‘em, stop ‘em from shootin’. Kinda like how I used to keep them chickens from gettin’ out of the coop. Always gotta be watchin’ ‘em.
Then there’s these “quick plays”. My grandson uses these all the time. Says it’s the easiest way to get an open shot. You hold down that circle button, and point that left stick at a teammate. That teammate will cut to the basket or somethin’, tryin’ to get open. It’s like tellin’ your dog to fetch, only with a basketball.
And don’t forget that right stick can do more than just dribble. You can rotate it, too. Clockwise or counter-clockwise, dependin’ on what you wanna do. My grandson’s always yellin’ about “post moves” and “fadeaways”. I don’t know much about that, but it seems important.
So, that’s the gist of it. NBA 2k controls on the PS4. Ain’t so hard, is it? Just takes a little practice. Like makin’ a good pot of stew, gotta get the ingredients and the timing just right. Now get out there and win some games, ya hear? And don’t forget to eat your vegetables!

Remember, keep that left stick movin’, square button for shootin’, X for passin’, L2 for defense, R2 for runnin’, and circle for them quick plays. And that right stick, well, that’s for all the fancy stuff. Now go on, git! You got this!
And one more thing. My grandson says to check out the “2KU” mode in the game. It’s like a tutorial, teaches you all this stuff. But I figured I’d give you the down-home version, straight from the… well, never mind where from. Just go play the game, and have some fun!
