Alright, let’s talk about them NBA 2K controls on that PS4, you know, the thing my grandkids play all the time. It’s a game about basketball, they tell me. Lots of running and bouncing that ball. And these buttons, oh boy, so many buttons! But I figured some of it out, so listen up.
First off, movin’ around. That’s with the stick on the left, they call it the “LS” or somethin’. Push it up, the fella moves up the court, push it down, he moves back. Simple enough, like drivin’ a tractor, kinda. Only faster, and you ain’t plantin’ no seeds, you’re throwin’ a ball.

Then there’s shootin’. That’s important, right? Gotta get that ball in the hoop. For shootin’, they use a button or somethin’ called the “Square” button. Just press it and the fella jumps and throws the ball. Sometimes it goes in, sometimes it don’t. Just like life, I tell ya.
Now, passin’ the ball. You can’t just run around by yourself all the time. Gotta pass it to your buddies. There’s a button for that too, a circle one, the “O” button they call it. Press that, and the fella throws the ball to another fella on your team. Sometimes they catch it, sometimes they drop it. Kids these days, need to practice catchin’ like we did with eggs on the farm.
- Moving: Left Stick (LS)
- Shooting: Square Button
- Passing: Circle Button (O)
And there’s this fancy stuff, dribblin’ they call it. You gotta bounce the ball while you’re movin’, or the other fellas will steal it. That’s also with the left stick, the “LS”, but you gotta tap it and move it around. Makes the fella do all sorts of tricks with the ball. Fancy stuff, like watchin’ a chicken dance, but with a ball.
Then there’s defense. Gotta stop the other team from scorin’. For that, you use a button on the right side, they call it “R2” I think. Hold it down and the fella gets all up in the other fella’s face, tryin’ to steal the ball. Like a hawk watchin’ a mouse, gotta be quick!
And there’s somethin’ called postin’ up. That’s when you get close to the other fella, back him down, and try to score close to the basket. For postin’ up, it seems like you hold somethin’ called “L2” and move the “RS” stick which is on the right side, real close to the “O” button. It is like wrestlin’ a pig, gotta be strong and use your body. These young fellas online they just run around shootin’ balls from far away, they don’t appreciate the postin’ up game, just like they don’t appreciate a good plate of collard greens!
They got all these other buttons too, for fancy passes and special moves. Like, you can press two buttons at the same time to do a “lob pass,” that’s when you throw the ball high in the air for another fella to catch and dunk. And you can hold down a button and move the stick to do a “step-back” shot, that’s when you fake like you’re driving to the basket, then jump back and shoot. Lots of stuff to remember, I tell ya. Like tryin’ to remember all the grandkids’ birthdays!
More Advanced Stuff (for those young whippersnappers)
Now, for the fancy stuff, the stuff my grandkids do all the time. They got these “pro stick controls,” somethin’ like that. That means using the right stick, the “RS” they call it, to do all sorts of tricks. Like, you can flick it up to shoot a jump shot, or flick it down to do a layup. And you can move it around to do different dribbling moves. It’s like dancin’ with the ball, kinda. But you gotta be quick, or you’ll lose the ball.
And there are these things called “icon passing.” That’s when you press a button and little pictures show up over your teammates’ heads. Then you press another button to pass the ball to that specific fella. It’s like callin’ out to your chickens by name, only with basketball players. To do that icon passin’ you press the “O” button twice.
And then there’s “defensive settings.” You can change how your fellas play defense, like whether they stay close to their man or sag back and wait for him to come to them. It’s like settin’ up your fence around the garden, gotta keep them varmints out. To set that defense you hold that “L1” button which is at the top left side.

So, yeah, that’s the NBA 2K controls on the PS4, as best as I can explain it. Lots of buttons, lots of moves, lots of fancy stuff. But at the end of the day, it’s just a game. Like throwin’ horseshoes, only with a ball and a hoop. And a whole lot more buttons.
Remember, practice makes perfect, just like bakin’ a good pie. And don’t get too frustrated if you can’t figure it all out right away. Even those fancy pants players on TV miss shots sometimes. So grab that controller, press some buttons, and have some fun. And don’t forget to eat your vegetables, they’re good for your eyes, and you’ll need good eyes to see all them buttons!
