Well now, y’all might’ve heard, but the Magic folks done made some big changes ‘round here, starting August 26, 2024. If you play these games, I reckon you ought to know what’s happenin’! They been bannin’ and restrictin’ cards left and right, and you gotta keep up if you don’t want your deck gettin’ all messed up.
First off, in the Pioneer format, they gone and banned a card called Amalia Benavides Aguirre. Now, I’m sure some of y’all might not know her, but she was a real power player. She could do all sorts of fancy things with the game, and when you got power like that, well, it don’t always sit right with the folks in charge. They say it’s cause she was too good at makin’ games last forever. It wasn’t just her though. Sorin, Imperious Bloodlord, got banned too. He’s another one of them vampires that could make things last too long, I reckon. They said the game needed more balance, and so they got rid of these two.

Then, in the Modern format, they banned a couple of cards too. Nadu, Winged Wisdom and Grief both got the boot. Now, don’t ask me too much about these cards, ‘cause I’m just an old lady, but it sounds like Grief was a real troublemaker, especially in Legacy too. The folks in charge said that Grief had too much control and could mess up the whole game in ways that ain’t fair to the others.
As for Urza’s Saga and Vexing Bauble, they didn’t get banned, but they got restricted in Vintage. If y’all don’t know, restricted means you can only have one of each card in your deck. These two cards are so powerful that they couldn’t let folks run wild with ‘em, so they’re gonna make it a bit harder to get all the benefits they give. Urza’s Saga, well, it’s been making a lot of folks too strong, and Vexing Bauble, well, that thing could just keep drawin’ cards and never stop. Ain’t nobody got time for that.
Now, there’s somethin’ else to mention too. Looks like Zen’s comin’ back to the format. Don’t know much about him, but folks are talkin’ like he’s gonna stir things up again. I reckon it’s about time, folks are gettin’ tired of the same old thing. We’ll see if he’s a good addition or if he just causes more trouble, but I reckon it’ll make things interesting either way.
So, if y’all play Magic and you’re still usin’ any of them banned cards, you better go back to the drawing board and figure out what to put in their place. You don’t wanna get caught with your pants down when the tournament starts and your deck is all wrong.
Remember folks, they do this bannin’ and restrictin’ to keep the game fair, or so they say. Ain’t nothing worse than when one card runs the show, and that’s why they make these changes. Just keep your eyes peeled and stay ahead of the curve, and you might just be alright. Good luck to ya!
