Okay, so today I wanted to mess around with Smeargle in Pokemon Go, you know, that weird little painter Pokemon? I’ve always thought it was kinda cool how it gets moves based on snapshots, but I never really dug into making a “best” moveset. So, that’s what I did today!
Figuring Out the Basics
First, I needed to remind myself how Smeargle even works. Basically, you take snapshots of your other Pokemon, and Smeargle can photobomb the picture. When it does, it learns the moves of the Pokemon you were taking a picture of. Pretty simple, right?

But, Smeargle has some limits. There are some moves that Smeargle can’t learn no matter how hard you try. These moves include Transform and exclusive moves learned at the special event.
My Experimentation Phase
So, I started snapping away! I pulled out some of my strongest Pokemon with different move types. I wanted to see what would give Smeargle the best coverage. Here’s a bit of what I tried:
- Fighter: I used a Machamp with Counter and Dynamic Punch. I thought, “Hey, good Fighting-type moves, those could be useful!”
- fairy:I used a Togekiss with Charm and Dazzling * with fairy fast moves.
- Dragon:I used a dragonite with Dragon Tail and Outrage. That seemed like a solid combo.
- Ground:I used a Groudon with Mud Shot and Earthquake.
I took snapshots of each of these guys, hoping Smeargle would pop up. It took a few tries sometimes, which was a little annoying, but eventually, I got my Smeargle with the different movesets.
Testing and Results
After I got a few Smeargle with different moves, I started testing them out. Mostly, I just did some battles against Team Rocket grunts and in the lower-level raids, because, let’s be honest, Smeargle isn’t exactly a powerhouse.
Here’s what I found:
It turns out Smeargle can’t learn some legacy moves.
- The Fighting-type moveset was pretty decent! Counter is a fast move, and Dynamic Punch packs, well, a punch.
- Charm,a fairy fast moves,it’s very powerful.
- The Dragon-type moves were okay, but nothing super special on Smeargle.
- The Ground-type is a good choose.
My Conclusion (For Now!)
Honestly, getting a “best” moveset is tough because it depends on what you want to use Smeargle for. It’s never going to be a top-tier attacker. But, for fun? It’s awesome! I think the Fighting-type moveset or fairy-type is probably the most generally * can defeat some low level raid.
But really, the best part is just experimenting. Try taking snapshots of different Pokemon and see what you get! That’s the whole fun of Smeargle, right?
