Okay, so I tried out this “BREAD” thing for drafting in Magic: The Gathering today. I’ve heard people talk about it, but never really gave it a shot until now. Honestly, I was kinda skeptical, but it was interesting.
First, I opened my packs. I am playing a chaos draft that include a lot of old packs. I had no clue what sets most of these are!

So, BREAD, right? It’s supposed to be this order of picking cards:
- Bombs
- Removal
- Evasion
- Aggro
- Duds
I started by looking for “Bombs” – you know, those cards that just win you the game if you play them. I am so lucky to open two insane rare in two of three packs. Those are clearly the cards I should focus on.
Next, I focused on “Removal”. I think it’s super important to get rid of opponent’s creatures. I found a couple, but not as many as I’d hoped. That made me a little nervous, but I moved on.
Then came “Evasion” – creatures that are hard to block, like with flying or something. I tried to grab a few of those. Evasion is always better in limited than the constructed format. It’s always good to include some in the deck.
After that, I started looking at “Aggro”, just regular creatures that can attack. I picked up a few that seemed decent, trying to keep my mana curve in mind, you know? Don’t want too many expensive cards.
Finally, it was “Duds” time. The leftovers. I don’t like to have to pick this. At this time I have a few cards left to complete the deck, that is when you have to make a decision!
After the draft, I built my deck, trying to stick to the colors of my best cards. I ended up with, I think, a pretty solid deck.
I think BREAD helped me focus, especially in the beginning. It’s easy to get distracted by shiny rares, but this forced me to think about the whole deck.
