Okay, so I’ve been diving deep into Pokemon Go lately, trying to figure out which Pokemon are actually worth the Stardust and Candy. Today’s experiment? Cacturne. I’ve always thought this Grass/Dark-type looked pretty cool, like a spooky scarecrow, but is it actually good in battles?
My Cacturne Catching Spree
First things first, I needed a decent Cacturne. I started by hunting down Cacnea, its pre-evolution. Luckily, they weren’t too hard to find, popping up here and there, especially during the daytime. I used Pinap Berries whenever I could to double the Candy – gotta get that evolution fuel!

After a few days of casual playing, I finally snagged enough Cacnea Candy to evolve one. I picked my highest IV Cacnea – it wasn’t perfect, but it had decent stats. Fingers crossed, I hit that evolve button and boom, there it was, my very own Cacturne!
Testing the Waters (or, uh, the Grass?)
Now for the fun part: battling. I started with some Team Rocket Grunt battles. Cacturne’s Dark typing gives it an advantage against Psychic and Ghost types, so I figured it would be a good way to test its basic moveset.
- Sucker Punch (Dark-type Fast Move): Felt pretty quick, and did some solid damage against those annoying Grunts with Psychic Pokemon.
- Dynamic Punch (Fighting-type Charged Move) : It took a few hits but can deal with the normal type.
I tried a few different Charged Moves too:
- Grass Knot (Grass-type): Seemed decent, but nothing to write home about.
- Dark Pulse (Dark-type): Good for that consistant Dark type damage, but I perfer Dynamic Punch.
The Verdict: Is Cacturne Good?
Honestly? Cacturne is… okay. It’s not going to blow your mind, and it’s definitely not going to be topping any “best Pokemon” lists. Its stats are just kind of average, and it’s pretty vulnerable to a lot of common types like Fire, Bug, and Fighting. It just doesn’t have a good defensive stats.
But, it’s not terrible either. It can be useful in specific situations, like taking down those Psychic-type Grunts. If you like its design, or if you just want to try something different, go for it! Just don’t expect it to carry your team to victory.
My final take? Cacturne is more of a fun, niche Pokemon than a serious powerhouse. I’ll probably keep mine around for those occasional Grunt battles, but I won’t be investing a ton of Stardust into powering it up. There are just better options out there.
