Alright, let’s talk about “shadow Persian counters” in Age of Empires. I’ve been messing around with this for a while, and I’m finally getting the hang of it, so I figured I’d share my experience.
Diving In – Early Struggles
First off, let me tell you, those Shadow Persians can be a real pain. I started by just throwing units at them randomly. You know, the usual – some skirmishers, maybe a few archers, whatever I had on hand. Big mistake. I got crushed, like, every single time. It was frustrating, to say the least. I almost gave up, seriously.

Experimentation and Realization
But I’m stubborn, so I kept at it. I started paying more attention to what actually happened during the battles. I watched the replays (yeah, I know, boring, but necessary). And I slowly started to see a pattern.
- First realization: Skirmishers alone are not enough, they melt like butter.
- Second Realization:Need some beefy boys in front to take some damage.
Putting it Together – A Working Strategy
So, I began to refine my approach.I mixed some heavy units in with my Skirmishers. Like, I’d send in a few spearmen or even some light cavalry to act as a meat shield. It sounds simple, but it made a HUGE difference. They’d soak up some of the initial damage, letting my skirmishers actually do their job.
Then, I went beyond that. I experimented. For example, sometimes i will use Mangonels. Those things can be devastating if you can protect them. So I’d use the same tactic – a few heavy units to keep the shadow Persians busy, while the Mangonels rained down destruction. It’s all about the setup, really.
I am not gonna lie, it still takes practice. You gotta scout properly, react quickly, and micro-manage your units. It’s not a fire-and-forget kind of deal. But once you get the rhythm down, it’s super satisfying to watch those Shadow Persians crumble.
So, yeah, that’s my journey so far. Still learning, still improving, but definitely making progress. Hope this helps anyone else struggling with those pesky Shadow Persians!
