Okay, so I’ve been messing around with Valorant lately, and one thing that’s been bugging me is how to actually pick agents effectively. It’s not just about who looks cool, right? There’s, like, actual strategy involved. So, I started this little experiment to figure things out.
My Experiment Started
First, I jumped into a bunch of unrated games. I mean, a LOT. I figured I needed to try out all the agents, even the ones I thought I’d hate. So, I went through the whole roster, one by one.

- I started with the duelists, because, you know, flashy plays and all that. Jett, Raze, Phoenix… the usual suspects.
- Then I moved on to the controllers. Smokes are super important, so I wanted to get a feel for Brimstone, Viper, and Omen.
- Initiators were next. Sova’s arrows, Skye’s flashes… it’s all about setting up your teammates.
- Finally, I tried out the sentinels. Cypher, Sage, Killjoy… the defensive powerhouses.
The Process, My Thinking
While I was playing, I started taking notes. Like, actual pen-and-paper notes. I jotted down what felt good, what felt clunky, and what situations each agent seemed to shine in. I even made little charts of maps and where certain abilities seemed most useful.
It wasn’t pretty. My first few games with some agents were… rough. I remember one time I completely whiffed a Viper ult and basically smoked my own team out of a site. Total disaster. But I kept at it.
Slowly, I started to see patterns. Like, on Bind, Raze’s grenades are amazing for clearing out those tight corners. Or how Sova’s recon dart can completely shut down a push on Ascent. It’s like the pieces of the puzzle started to fit together.
The Result
After all this, I didn’t magically become a Radiant player. But I did get a much better understanding of how to choose an agent based on the map, my team’s comp, and even the enemy team’s likely picks. It’s not just about “I like this agent,” it’s about “This agent will help us win on this map, in this situation.”
I even created my go to picks of agents based on maps and other factors. It is far from professional, but for a casual gamer like me, it improved a lot.
So yeah, that’s my little Valorant agent-picking journey. Still learning, still grinding, but definitely feeling a bit more confident in my choices now.
