Okay, so I saw this “nike mad” thing trending and figured, why not give it a shot? I’m no sneakerhead, but I like messing around with stuff, so here’s how my little experiment went.
The Idea
First, I needed to figure out what exactly I was going to do. I googled around a bit and saw people customizing their Nikes, some were painting, some stitching, crazy stuff. I wanted something simple, something I could actually pull off without ruining a perfectly good pair of shoes.

Getting Started
I grabbed an old pair of white Air Force 1s from my closet. Classic choice, right? They were kinda beat up, so I wouldn’t feel too bad if I messed them up. Then, I went through my junk drawer and my art boxes and found a few things I Thought I could test and use:
- Some permanent markers
- A couple of different colored fabric paints.
- An old toothbrush.
- Masking tape.
The Messy Part
First thing, I cleaned the shoes as best as I could. Gotta have a clean canvas, you know? Then I used the masking tape to section off parts of the shoe I didn’t want to paint. I’m not great with a brush, so this helped keep things somewhat neat. I decided to go with a simple color-block design, nothing too fancy.
I started with the fabric paint. I watered it down a little bit, just to make it easier to spread. Then, using the toothbrush, I kinda splattered some paint on another section, trying to get a cool, textured effect. It was… interesting. Definitely a learning experience.
The markers came in handy for adding some smaller details. I drew some simple lines and shapes, trying to follow the natural lines of the shoe. I’m no artist, but I think it turned out okay.
The Waiting Game
After I was done with the painting and drawing, I had to let the shoes dry. This was the hardest part! I’m impatient. I think I waited like, a full day, just to be sure. I poked at them a few times to make sure they are completely dry.
The Final Result
Once they were dry, I carefully peeled off the masking tape. There were a few smudges, but nothing too major. Overall, I was pretty happy with how they turned out! They’re definitely unique, and it was fun to do something different. It’s not professional-level customization, but hey, I made them my own.
It’s wonky, but it’s my wonky pair of air force ones. I may never do this again, but that’s okay. I’m glad I tried it. Next time I want to try a different shoe.
