Okay, so I’ve been obsessed with Animal Crossing: New Horizons lately (who hasn’t, right?). One thing I struggled with initially was figuring out the perfect gifts for my villagers. I wanted to boost our friendships, but I didn’t want to give them something they’d just shove in their storage and never look at again.
So, I started experimenting. I mean, really experimenting. I took notes, made lists, the whole nine yards. Here’s how I approached it.

Phase 1: The Scattershot Approach
At first, I was just giving everyone whatever I had lying around. Fossils? Sure! Random fruit? Why not! A sea bass I just caught? You got it! This… didn’t work great. Some villagers were happy, others seemed confused, and I swear, a few gave me the side-eye.
My results were all over the place. I needed a better system.
Phase 2: The “Talk to Everyone” Method
Then, I figured I’d just pay close attention to what they talked about. If they mentioned wanting a specific item, I’d try to get it for them. This was a little better, but it was super slow. Plus, my villagers mostly talk about snacks and their favorite bugs, so it wasn’t always helpful.
- Pros: Felt more personal, villagers seemed to appreciate the effort.
- Cons: Time-consuming, relied on random conversations, often led nowhere.
Phase 3: The Deep Dive (aka Internet Research)
Finally, I caved and did some serious online research. And it was a godsend. I looked through other peoples suggestions, watched their videos, and realized that all villagers have particular items that they like and dislike.
I compiled my findings into my own chart, I realized that I could get a lot of mileage out of some basic things:
- Wrapped fruit: Stacked up fruit, especially non-native fruit, and wrapped it. Easy and effective!
- Iron Wall Lamps: Crafted a bunch of these, They’re simple to make and most villagers seem to like them in their homes.
- Fossils: Assessed fossils, of course, I kept on gifting. These are also a solid, safe bet.
Phase 4: The Refined Gifting System
Now, I have a system. I still pay attention to specific requests, but my go-to gifts are the ones I listed above. I wrap everything – it just feels more special, you know? And I try to vary things a little to keep it interesting.
My friendships are leveling up much faster, and my villagers are actually displaying some of the stuff I give them! It’s so satisfying to see them using or wearing something I picked out. So my advice? Do a little research, find your go-to gifts, and don’t be afraid to experiment! It’s all part of the fun.
