Okay, so I’ve been diving deep into the world of competitive Pokemon lately, and Greninja is one of my absolute favorites. I wanted to breed the perfect one, so I spent a lot of time figuring out the best IVs. Here’s how it went down, and what I learned.
The Starting Point: My Regular Greninja
First, I just caught a bunch of Froakies. I wasn’t even thinking about IVs at this point, just trying to get one with the Protean ability, which is way better than Torrent. Got lucky after a few tries, and boom, Protean Froakie!

Digging into IVs: Research Time
Next, I needed to understand what IVs even meant for Greninja. I knew perfect IVs (31 in each stat) are ideal, but which stats really mattered most? I hit up some online forums and guides. Seems like everyone agrees on a few key things:
- Speed: Greninja is FAST. That’s its thing. So, max Speed IVs are a must.
- Special Attack: Most of Greninja’s best moves are Special Attacks (like Hydro Pump, Ice Beam, etc.). So, gotta max this out too.
The other stats? Less critical, but still good to have high if possible. HP is always nice, and the defenses… well, Greninja isn’t exactly known for being tanky, but every little bit helps.
The Breeding Grind: Many, Many Eggs
This is where the real work began. I paired my Protean Froakie with a Ditto. I used a Destiny Knot so that five of six IV is pass to their child, and an Everstone to ensure the right nature. I spent hour after hour to breed. Boxes and boxes full of Froakies. Most of them were… not great.
I used an IV calculator (found one online, pretty easy to use) to check each Froakie as it hatched. I kept the ones with high Speed and Special Attack, and slowly, very slowly, started getting better and better results.
The Breakthrough: Almost Perfect!
After what felt like forever, I finally hatched a Froakie with 31 IVs in Speed and Special Attack! It even had pretty good HP and decent defenses. I was stoked! This was my champion, the Greninja I’d been working towards.
It cost me a lot of time, but I successfully breed a Greninja that has IV of 31 in Speed and Special Attack. It worth!
The Takeaway: Patience Pays Off
Breeding for perfect IVs is a grind. There’s no getting around it. But if you’re serious about competitive battling, it’s worth the effort. That little boost in stats can make all the difference in a close match. My Greninja is now a total powerhouse, and it feels awesome knowing I put in the work to make it that way.
