Okay, so I’ve been playing a ton of Animal Crossing: New Horizons lately, and I got REALLY into diving for sea creatures. One that kept eluding me for a while was the abalone. I knew it was out there, but I just couldn’t seem to snag one. So, I decided to get serious and figure this thing out.
First, I made sure it was the right time of year. I looked it up, and it turns out abalone are only available during certain months. In my hemisphere, it was good to go – phew!

Next, I geared up. I mean, I put on my wet suit. That’s pretty much all the gearing up you need in Animal Crossing. 😆
Then, I hit the ocean. I spent a good chunk of time just swimming around, looking for those telltale bubbles. The key, I realized, is to pay attention to the size and speed of the shadow. Abalone shadows are supposed to be medium-sized and they don’t move super fast, but they are not totally still like some of the shellfish.
- Swim around pressing Y to dive underwater.
- Search for the shadow in the water.
- Chase it down.
I chased down a bunch of shadows that turned out to be other things – sea stars, sea grapes, even a few faster-moving critters. It was a little frustrating, but I kept at it.
Finally, I spotted a shadow that seemed promising. Medium size, not zooming around, but not still, just the information had described. I dove down, swam over, and… BAM! Got it! My first abalone! It wasn’t as exciting as, like, catching a shark, but it was still super satisfying to finally cross it off my list.
So yeah, that’s my abalone-catching adventure. Basically, it just took some persistence, and paying close attention to the details. Now I can donate it to Blathers at the museum and feel all smug about completing another part of my Critterpedia. On to the next challenge!
