Alright, so I wanted to get a better handle on the archetypes in MLB The Show 23. I’d heard some chatter online, but nothing beats diving in yourself, right? So, I fired up the game and started poking around.
Getting Started
First, I went straight to where you build your Ballplayer. I figured that’s where all the archetype stuff would live. I gotta say, it’s laid out pretty clearly. You pick your position, and then you see the available archetypes.

Exploring the Archetypes
I spent some time just clicking through each position. Like, for a pitcher, you’ve got your “Flamethrower” if you wanna blow it by hitters. I created a new Ballplayer, get into the archetype section.
- Cheese: Boosts velocity, like crazy fastballs.
- Control Freak: Pinpoint accuracy. All about painting the corners.
- Knucksie: Focus on the knuckleball. I’m not even good at throwing them, but it’s an option.
And it’s different for position players! You got your power hitters, contact guys, speedy fielders. All got their own archetype thing going on.
Digging Deeper
So, the names kinda tell you what’s up, but I noticed these little “program” things attached to each archetype. Click on one, and it shows you how to level it up. Basically, you gotta play the game and complete specific goals.
For instance, if I’m working on a “Slick Fielding” archetype for my shortstop, I gotta make a bunch of good defensive plays. Diving stops, double plays, that kind of stuff. Each time you hit a milestone, your archetype gets stronger, and your player’s stats go up.
My Takeaway
It is very simple. Pick an archetype that fits how you like to play. Want to mash home runs? Go for a power-focused one. More of a slap-hitter who gets on base? There’s an archetype for that, too.
And don’t be afraid to experiment! I started with a “Flamethrower” pitcher, but then I got the itch to try a crafty lefty, so I messed around with a “Control Freak” archetype. It’s all about finding what works for you and having fun with it.
