Okay, so today I wanted to mess around with this “Gengar” thing in the game. I’ve heard a lot about how tough it can be, so I figured, why not try to figure out some good counters for it? I hopped into the game and started by checking out Gengar’s type and moves. It’s a Ghost and Poison-type, which means it’s gonna be weak to Ghost, Dark, Psychic, and Ground-type moves.
First, I scoured through my collection to see what I had that could hit those weaknesses. I have a pretty decent collection. I immediately thought of the Tyranitar I caught a while back. It’s a strong Dark-type, and I’ve leveled it up quite a bit. It’s got Bite and Crunch, which should be super effective. I decided that Tyranitar would be a good start.

Next, I remembered my Mewtwo. It’s a Psychic-type powerhouse. I’ve got it with Confusion and Psychic. That should do a hefty chunk of damage to Gengar. So Mewtwo was definitely going on the team.
I also thought about using my Groudon. It’s a Ground-type, and it knows Mud Shot and Earthquake. But I wasn’t sure how effective it would be since Gengar can sometimes have Levitate, which makes it immune to Ground moves. I decided to keep Groudon as a backup just in case.
First Test
- Selected Tyranitar and Mewtwo for the initial team.
- Started a raid battle against a Gengar.
- Tyranitar’s Bite and Crunch did some serious damage.
- Mewtwo’s Psychic blasted Gengar pretty hard too.
The first test went pretty well. Tyranitar and Mewtwo handled the Gengar without too much trouble. But I wanted to see if I could optimize it further.
Second Test
- Swapped out Tyranitar for Groudon to see if Ground moves would work.
- Started another raid battle.
- Gengar had Levitate, so Groudon’s attacks weren’t very effective.
Yeah, as I suspected, Groudon wasn’t the best choice if the Gengar had Levitate. So I went back to using Tyranitar.
Final Try
- Tried a combination of Mewtwo and a couple of other Dark-types I had, like Houndoom and Absol.
- Started another battle.
- This worked pretty well. The Dark-types took care of Gengar.
After all that messing around, I figured out that a strong Dark-type like Tyranitar, combined with a Psychic-type like Mewtwo, is a pretty solid way to counter Gengar. You can also throw in other strong Dark-types if you have them. Just watch out for that Levitate ability. If Gengar has it, don’t bother with Ground-types.
This is what I got, hope it can help you guys, too.
