Okay, so the other day I was messing around with my internet setup, and I started wondering about my internet speed. I mean, I game a lot, and sometimes I feel like my connection is not fast enough. So I got to thinking, “Is my 40 Mbps connection actually fast enough for gaming?” I did a little digging and decided to run some tests myself to figure it out.
Setting up the tests
First, I grabbed my laptop and connected it directly to my router with an Ethernet cable. I wanted to make sure I was getting the full 40 Mbps that I’m paying for. Then, I opened a couple of different speed test websites. You know, just to double-check the results and all.

Running the speed tests
I hit the “Go” button on the first site and watched as it measured my download and upload speeds. It came back at around 39 Mbps for download and about 5 Mbps for upload. I ran the test a few more times, and the results were pretty much the same. I switched to another speed test site and did the same thing. Again, similar results. It seemed like my connection was stable and delivering what I expected.
Testing with online games
Next, I fired up a few of my favorite online games. I started with a fast-paced shooter, something like Counter-Strike. I played a couple of matches, paying close attention to my ping and any lag spikes. Honestly, it felt pretty smooth. My ping was hovering around 30-40 ms, which is decent. I didn’t notice any major lag or rubber-banding.
Then I jumped into a more demanding game, like a battle royale. I figured this would be a good test since there are tons of players and lots of action happening at once. Again, the game ran surprisingly well. My ping was a bit higher, around 50-60 ms, but it was still playable. I did experience a couple of minor lag spikes, but nothing that ruined the experience.
Trying other online activities
After that, I decided to test some other stuff. I started streaming a movie in HD while also downloading a large game file in the background. I wanted to see if my connection could handle multiple things at once. The movie streamed without any buffering, and the download chugged along steadily. I even tried making a video call while all this was happening, and the call quality was good. No major issues there.
My conclusions
So, after all these tests, what did I learn? Well, it turns out that 40 Mbps is actually pretty decent for gaming, at least for my needs. I was able to play online games without any major problems. Sure, I had a few minor lag spikes here and there, but nothing too serious. I could also stream and download stuff while gaming, which is a plus.
- It seems 40 Mbps is enough for casual online gaming.
- My ping was mostly stable, though it varied depending on the game.
- Streaming and downloading while gaming was no problem.
Of course, everyone’s experience might be different. It depends on your location, your ISP, and even the games you play. But for me, 40 Mbps seems to be doing the job just fine. I might consider upgrading in the future if I start playing more demanding games or if I need even lower ping, but for now, I’m pretty happy with what I’ve got.
