Okay, so, I’ve been messing around with Red XIII in Rebirth lately, and let me tell you, figuring out his weapons and abilities has been a wild ride. I wanted to share my experiences because it took me some time to get it right.
First off, I started by just slapping on whatever weapon I had for Red. Bad idea. I quickly realized that each weapon has its own unique abilities and stats, and I was just going in blind. So I started experimenting.

I equipped different weapons and took Red into a few battles. The Mythril Collar, yeah, that was one of the first ones I tried. It was okay, but nothing to write home about. Then I switched to the Renegade’s Collar, which had a bit more oomph, especially with that “Chilling Roar” ability. That one freezes enemies, which is pretty neat when you’re getting swarmed.
- Equipped Mythril Collar – felt weak.
- Swapped to Renegade’s Collar – better, liked the “Chilling Roar.”
- Tested Silver Collar – defense boost was noticeable.
But here’s where things got interesting. I read somewhere online – can’t remember where exactly – that Red’s a good candidate for auto abilities. Something about “Auto-Unique” and “Auto-Weapon+HP Absorption.” Sounded fancy, so I dug into the menus and found these materia combos.
I slotted in “Provoke” materia too, because the post I read mentioned it. Apparently, the AI is supposed to do a better job blocking when you use these together. Honestly, it felt like magic. Red was suddenly way more durable, taking hits and dishing out damage like a champ.
My Current Setup
Right now, I’m running Red with the Silver Collar for that extra defense boost, combined with the Auto-Unique and Auto-Weapon+HP Absorption materia. Plus, Provoke, of course. It’s been a game-changer. He’s way more self-sufficient in battles, and I can focus on other characters more.
I’m still experimenting, though. There’s a bunch of other weapons I haven’t fully explored yet, like the Amethyst Collar, which seems to boost magic attacks. And I’m curious about that “Watcher’s Respite” ability on the Golden Collar. Seems like it could be useful for long fights.
So, yeah, that’s my Red XIII journey so far. It’s been a lot of trial and error, but I feel like I’m finally getting a handle on how to make him a beast in battle. If you’ve got any tips or tricks, hit me up. I’m always down to learn more.
