Okay, so I’ve been diving deep into Elder Scrolls Online lately, and let me tell you, figuring out where to start is a whole quest in itself. When I first fired up the game, I found myself in this place called Coldharbour. It’s basically the tutorial area, set in Molag Bal’s realm in Oblivion. Super dreary, but it’s a good way to get the hang of the controls.
I zipped through Coldharbour pretty quickly. I mean, it’s designed to be quick, right? I heard some experienced players can blast through it in, like, 15 minutes, but for me, it took a little longer. It’s easy to spend less than an hour there, and then you’re off to the “real” starting zones. And that’s where things get a bit confusing.

Apparently, the game now shoves new players into the newest expansion zone. I ended up in High Isle, which is cool and all, but I felt like I was missing out on something. I heard that in the past, you got a little more freedom in choosing where to begin your adventure. They really need to change that! Or let us new players have options to choose from.
Then, I started digging around online and found out that different factions have different starting areas. For example, I’m playing a Khajiit, which means I belong to the Aldmeri Dominion. And guess where their starting area is? A place called Khenarthi’s Roost. It’s actually a pretty cool little island, but I wouldn’t have known about it if I hadn’t done some research.
I also learned that there’s this whole “Soul Shriven in Coldharbour” questline that’s supposed to be the original starting point for the game. But with all these new expansions and changes, it seems like it’s gotten a bit lost in the shuffle. I wish they’d bring it back to the forefront or make it more obvious for new players.
There’re tons of beginner guides out there, and they’re super helpful for figuring out the basics. These guides break down everything from combat to crafting, and they really helped me get my bearings in the game. The Elder Scrolls Online is a massive game with a ton of content, so having these guides is a lifesaver.
- Coldharbour: The tutorial area, easy to rush through.
- New Expansions: Force new players into the latest expansion, which can be confusing.
- Faction Starting Areas: Different areas based on your chosen faction (e.g., Khenarthi’s Roost for Aldmeri Dominion).
- Soul Shriven Questline: The original starting point, now somewhat hidden.
- Beginner Guides: Essential for learning the ropes in this vast game.
Anyways, that’s my experience with the starting areas in Elder Scrolls Online so far. It’s a bit of a mixed bag, but I’m still having a blast exploring the world. I just wish the game did a better job of guiding new players through the early stages.
What were your guys’ experiences when you first started playing ESO? Did you feel lost or did you find it easy to navigate? Let me know in the comments!
