Alright, so the other day I was super into catching some Pokemon in Pokemon GO, as usual. And I got to thinking, “How rare is it to actually snag a shiny Magikarp?” I mean, I’ve seen a few, but are they really that hard to come by? So, I did what any normal person would do – I went on a mission to find out.
First, I started hitting up every Magikarp nest I could find. I’m talking parks, rivers, you name it. If there was a chance a Magikarp could spawn, I was there. I spent hours walking around, tapping on every single floppy fish that popped up on my screen. My phone battery took a serious beating, but hey, anything for the cause, right?

My Shiny Magikarp Hunt: Day One
- Location: Local park with a big lake
- Time Spent: About 3 hours
- Magikarp Encountered: 127
- Shiny Magikarp: 0
Day one was rough. No shiny, but I did get a good amount of regular Magikarp candies. And hey, a man needs to get his steps in, am I right? I was determined, though. No way was I giving up that easily.
Day Two: More Water, More Fish
- Location: Downtown area near the river
- Time Spent: 4 hours (with a lunch break, of course)
- Magikarp Encountered: 188
- Shiny Magikarp: Still 0…
Day two was even more intense. I was dodging tourists, narrowly avoiding collisions with bikers, and pretty sure I saw a guy in a Pikachu costume. But, still no shiny Magikarp. I started to wonder if these things were just a myth. Were they just a legend whispered among Pokemon trainers? Was I chasing a ghost?
Day Three: The Golden Moment
- Location: Back to the park, different spot though
- Time Spent: 2 hours
- Magikarp Encountered: 84
- Shiny Magikarp: 1!!!
Then, on the third day, it happened. I was about to call it quits, ready to accept defeat, when BAM! A golden Magikarp appeared on my screen. I couldn’t believe my eyes. I almost dropped my phone in excitement. I threw a berry, held my breath, and tossed a Great Ball. The ball shook once, twice, three times… and click! I caught it!
I’m not gonna lie, I did a little victory dance right there in the middle of the park. People were staring, but I didn’t care. I had finally caught my shiny Magikarp! So, to answer my own question: yes, they are pretty rare, but with enough persistence, you can definitely find one. It took me three days, 399 Magikarp encounters, and a whole lot of walking, but it was totally worth it. Now, I’ve got a shiny Magikarp, and soon, a shiny Gyarados! It is cool, yeah!
Keep on catching, folks! Keep moving and never give up!
