Alright, so, I’ve been grinding away on Pokemon Go lately, and I got really curious about something – just how rare is a shiny Magikarp? I mean, I’ve caught tons of these little orange fish, but a shiny one? That’s a whole different ball game. So, I started my little mission to figure this out.
First, I jumped into the game, tapping on every Magikarp that popped up on my screen. I figured, the more I encounter, the better my chances, right? I spent hours each day, walking around my neighborhood, visiting different PokeStops, and just catching ’em all. Man, my legs were sore, but I was determined.

Then, I started tracking my encounters. I made a simple list, nothing fancy, just to keep count of how many Magikarps I was bumping into. I also hit up some online forums and communities. I saw some folks saying the odds were about 1 in 450 for a regular shiny, but I wanted to see for myself.
- Day 1: Caught about 50 Magikarps, no shiny.
- Day 3: Over 150 Magikarps in, still nothing.
- Day 7: I was at 300-something, and my hope was dwindling.
I even tried joining a few raids, thinking maybe a special event would boost my chances. I remember one time, I teamed up with a bunch of other players for a big raid. We took down this huge Pokemon, and I was all excited, thinking maybe, just maybe, this was it. But nope, still no shiny Magikarp.
My Shiny Hunt Continues
After about a week or so, I had caught over 400 Magikarps. I was starting to think this shiny was just a myth. But then, it happened. I was tapping on a Magikarp, not really expecting anything, and bam! There it was, a golden Magikarp, sparkling on my screen. I couldn’t believe my eyes! I quickly threw a berry and used my best ball, and I caught it!
So, based on my little experiment, it took me over 400 encounters to find a shiny Magikarp. It was a lot of work, but totally worth it. It’s definitely rare, but not impossible. And honestly, the hunt was part of the fun. If you’re also trying to catch one, don’t give up! It might take a while, but that shiny Magikarp is out there, waiting for you to catch it.
