Okay, so I’ve been getting into this whole Magic: The Gathering thing lately, and let me tell you, it’s a rabbit hole. I wanted to build a deck around these Phyrexian cards because, well, they look nasty and cool. And I thought why not write down how I did it here?
I started by looking at what other people were doing. There’s a ton of info out there, it’s kinda overwhelming, actually. Some folks were talking about a mono-black deck, which sounded right up my alley, but then they mentioned a “white splash” for some card called “Path of Peril” and I’m like, “What the heck is that?” I just wanna play with my creepy Phyrexian cards. I mean, I’m still a beginner, just a few weeks in, playing on MTG Arena.

I decided to keep it simple. No splashing other colors for now, just straight-up black. I learned that you should start with 37 lands, which felt like a lot, but okay, I’ll roll with it. Then I started throwing in all sorts of Phyrexian creatures that caught my eye. I wanted them all! But then I realized I needed some other stuff too, like ways to get rid of my opponent’s creatures and draw more cards. I also added some cards that are not Phyrexian but are still good at killing, or help me get more mana and stuff.
The whole process was a mess, honestly. I kept changing my mind, adding cards, taking them out, and second-guessing myself. I checked the mana value of my cards. The average mana value without lands is around 2.8. Sounds high, right? But it worked somehow.
- First, I crammed in every Phyrexian card I could find.
- Then, I realized I needed more than just creatures, so I added removal spells.
- After that, I thought about card draw and mana ramp.
- Finally, I played a bunch of games, made tweaks, and played some more.
It took a while, but I finally got a deck that felt kinda okay. It wasn’t winning every game, but it was fun to play, and those Phyrexian creatures were doing their thing. I even managed to climb the standard ladder a bit, which was pretty cool. This deck is not Standard legal, though. Anyway, I just wanted to get this down while it was still fresh in my mind. Maybe I’ll look back on this later and laugh at how much of a noob I was, but hey, we all gotta start somewhere, right?
Building this Phyrexian deck was a wild ride, but I’m glad I did it. It’s still a work in progress, but it’s mine, and I’m learning a lot along the way. Who knows, maybe one day I’ll actually be good at this game. Until then, I’ll just keep on compleating, or whatever it’s called.
