Okay, so I’ve been hooked on Animal Crossing: New Horizons lately. It’s like, my go-to chill-out game, you know? Anyway, I wanted to complete my Critterpedia and Museum, which, let me tell you, is no small task. I decided to go after this one sea creature called an abalone. Sounds fancy, right?
So, first things first, I put on my wet suit. I mean, you can’t go diving without one! Then, I headed out to the ocean. The whole process is kinda relaxing, just swimming around, looking for bubbles. That’s how you know there might be something cool down there.

When I spotted some bubbles, I swam over and pressed “Y” to dive. Sometimes, you come up with some common sea creatures, but other times, it’s something a bit more special. Now, the abalone, it’s not super rare, but it’s not exactly common either. It’s one of those medium-speed things that can still be a bit of a pain to catch.
I tried a few times, just diving and chasing, but this little guy was tricky. You gotta be sneaky with these faster sea creatures. I remembered some tips from friends and then tried some other folks’ suggestions online, like not pressing “A” to swim fast. Instead, you just kinda glide over to them using the left stick, and then when you’re close, you dive.
Another trick I used was trying to corner them. Like, I herded one towards the edge of the roped-off area or the shoreline. It’s way easier to catch them when they’re trapped. I kept trying this, and it was working pretty well, but still no abalone.
I spent a good chunk of time doing this, just swimming, diving, and occasionally selling the other sea creatures I caught to Nook’s Cranny. It wasn’t all bad, I mean, I was making some bells, but I really wanted that abalone to complete the sea creatures’ part of my museum in this month.
Finally, after what felt like forever, but in reality, I spent like a whole week, I dove down, and there it was! A beautiful abalone. I swam fast as my character can, I pressed “A” repeatedly, I caught it! It was such a relief, honestly. I rushed back to the museum and donated it. Blathers was pretty stoked, as usual.
- Tips for catching abalone (or any fast sea creature):
- Don’t press “A” to swim fast, just use the left stick to get close.
- Try to corner them against the ropes or the shoreline.
- Be patient! It might take a few tries.
So yeah, that’s my abalone adventure. It was a bit of a grind, but totally worth it in the end. Now, onto the next challenge!
