Okay, so, the other day I tried to fire up Dead by Daylight on my Xbox, and bam! I got hit with this annoying “error code 8001” message. It was like the game just refused to connect to the internet or something. I was pretty bummed because I’d been looking forward to playing all day.
First thing I did, naturally, was to reboot my console. I held down the Xbox button on the front of the console for about, I don’t know, 10 seconds? Anyway, it shut down completely. Then, I turned it back on and tried the game again. No luck. Still the same error message.

So, I thought, maybe it’s an issue with my internet. I tried a few other online games, and they worked fine. That was a head-scratcher. If the internet was okay, what else could it be?
Then I remembered reading something about repairing and resetting apps. I figured, why not give it a shot? I went into the settings on my PC, clicked on “apps,” and found “Xbox.” There’s this “advanced options” thing there, so I clicked that, and there were buttons for “repair” and then “reset.” I clicked them both, one after the other, didn’t really pay attention to the order, to be honest.
After that, I did the exact same thing with the Dead by Daylight app and the Microsoft Store app. Just to be sure, you know? Repair, then reset, boom, boom.
Finally, I fired everything back up, logged back into my Xbox account, and crossed my fingers. And guess what? It worked! Dead by Daylight loaded up no problem, and I was able to play online again.
So yeah, that’s how I fixed the error code 8001 on Dead by Daylight for my Xbox. It was a bit of a pain, but at least I figured it out. Hopefully, this helps someone else out there who’s having the same problem.
- Tried rebooting the console.
- Checked my internet connection (it was fine).
- Repaired and reset the Xbox app.
- Repaired and reset the Dead by Daylight app.
- Repaired and reset the Microsoft Store app.
- Logged back in, and it worked!
What I did
It is just my guess but maybe it was a temporary file or setting that was messed up, and repairing and resetting cleared it out.
