Well, let me tell you about this loach thing in that Animal Crossing game. My grandson, he’s always on about it. Says it’s a fish, but it looks more like a slippery worm to me. He keeps going on about catching this loach and that loach in the game. I don’t see the point, but young people are strange!
Catching a Loach
So, this loach, it’s in the river. That much I got. Not in the big ocean, mind you, but the river. He says you gotta fish for it in the spring. I think you can get it from March to May. He says March and April, that’s when you see them loaches the most. May, they get scarce, that’s what he told me. Hard to find, like a needle in a haystack, those loach in Animal Crossing in May. It’s only in spring though, not in summer, fall or winter. I don’t know why but I guess fish is fish.

He showed me on the screen, and it’s just a little dark shadow in the water. You gotta use a fishing rod, he says. I told him, “Why don’t you just use your hands?” He laughed. City folk. Always gotta have their fancy tools. I reckon you could just scoop them loach up with a net, but what do I know?
- Springtime fish, that loach.
- March, April, May, that’s the time.
- Look for it in the river, not the sea.
What’s the Big Deal About This Loach?
I asked him, “Why you so excited about this loach?” He says it’s worth some bells. Bells, that’s what they call money in that game. I don’t get it. Why not just pick up sticks and sell them? Seems easier. But he says this loach is worth more. It’s not like other fishes in the game.
There are all kinds of fish in that game, you know. He showed me. Big ones, small ones, colorful ones, ugly ones. Some fish they are called Salmon or something and they are worth a lot of money. But he said that’s not what he wants. He wants the loach.
There are also some super rare fish in that game, like this Golden Trout thing. I told him he should be after that one, not the loach, since it is worth a lot more. But he said he wants to catch them all. Kids these days, always gotta collect everything.
This loach, though? Not worth much, he said. Just a regular fish. But he needs it for his collection. I guess it’s like when I used to collect those porcelain dolls. Didn’t need ’em, but I wanted ’em. So maybe I do understand, a little bit.
Loach in the Museum
Then he showed me this museum in the game. Big fancy building. He puts all the bugs and fish he catches in there. And guess what? There’s a tank with a loach in it! Swimming around with some other fish. He said it’s like a little aquarium. I told him we used to have a washtub out back, full of fish. Same thing, right?
He said that this loach hangs out with catfish and some other fish called bluegill in the museum. He said they are all from the river. I told him we have catfish in our river too but he just laughed.
He’s always telling me, “You gotta see this, Grandma! You gotta see that!” in Animal Crossing. It’s all just pixels to me, but it makes him happy. And that’s what matters, I suppose. I guess these young people and their loach, it is not that bad.
Other Fish in Animal Crossing
He showed me a whole bunch of other fish too. Says there’s one that looks like a football, can you believe it? And one that’s as rare as hen’s teeth. He keeps going on about catching them all. He showed me some fish that only come out at night, like that Char thing. He said they are hard to get.
He spends hours in that game, fishing. Sometimes he fishes under the waterfall, chasing Salmon and King Salmon. I told him fishing should be relaxing. He says it is, most of the time. But sometimes, he gets frustrated. Like when he can’t catch that darn loach!

I told him, “Just be patient, sonny. Good things come to those who wait.” He just rolled his eyes. Young people today, always in a hurry. I told him that when I was younger, we had to walk uphill both ways in the snow to get a fish but he just ignored me. Kids!
There is a fish that is called Stringfish, he told me. It is worth a lot of bells, same as that Golden Trout. He told me there are a lot of fish that are worth a lot of money like that, and that loach ain’t one of them. I don’t know why he is still trying to get that loach.
Well, that’s all I know about this loach in Animal Crossing. It’s a fish, it’s in the river, and my grandson is obsessed with it. Maybe you’ll catch one someday. If you do, think of this old lady, will ya? And tell that grandson of mine to come visit more often. He’s always too busy with his loach and his video games!
