This here phone game, what’s it called? Pokeman Go? My grandson, he’s always on about it. Says there’s this bird thing, Farfetch’d, that’s hard to find. Sounds far fetched to me! This old lady don’t understand, but I hear him talking, so I try to keep up.
Catching that Bird Thing
He says this Farfetch’d in Pokemon Go, it ain’t just anywhere. You gotta walk around, lookin’ at your phone. Kids these days, always with their faces in them phones. I tell ya, they’re gonna miss the world right out there in front of ’em. He’s always looking for Galarian Farfetch’d! He even said this Farfetch’d bird, it’s like a duck, but it carries a big green onion! Imagine that. A duck with an onion. What’ll they think of next?

He says it’s from somewhere called Asia. Japan, Korea, some place like that. Says it’s a “regional exclusive”. I don’t know what that means, but it sounds fancy. This Pokeman Go got all sorts of these fancy words. It’s only in them certain spots in the world, this Farfetch’d, but he said you can find it in different ways, but it’s tough.
- He said you can get the Galarian Farfetch’d from an egg.
- A 7-kilometer egg, he said.
- But sometimes, he said during events, maybe you can get it.
He keeps going on about these eggs you gotta hatch. You gotta walk and walk and walk, he says. Seven kilometers! That’s like walking to the Smith’s farm and back. Twice! Just for a picture of a bird on your phone. Back in my day, we walked that far to get to school. And we didn’t have no fancy phones to look at, neither!
That Pokeman Go Game
This Pokemon Go, it came out a while back, he was tellin’ me. July 6th, he says, like it was yesterday. He remembers these things. I can’t even remember what I had for breakfast. But he’s always goin’ on about these “events” they have. Special times when you can get different Pokemans, he says. They make a big fuss about it, all these kids runnin’ around town, starin’ at their phones.
He showed me a picture once, this Farfetch’d. It’s a funny lookin’ thing, I gotta say. A little brown bird, with this big green onion. Bigger than the bird, almost! He says it’s rare. Shiny Farfetch’d, he calls it. Like it’s made of gold or somethin’. He’s always lookin’ for the shiny ones. Says they’re special. I don’t see what’s so special about a different colored picture on a phone, but it makes him happy, I guess.
I try to tell him, son, there’s more to life than them Pokemans. Go outside, get some fresh air. He is outside, he says, walkin’ around lookin’ for ’em. I guess that’s somethin’. At least he ain’t cooped up inside all day. But still, he’s missin’ out on the real birds, the real trees. He don’t see ’em, ’cause he’s too busy lookin’ at his phone for that far fetched bird!
All These New-Fangled Things
These young’uns today, they got it easy. We didn’t have no Pokeman Go when I was a girl. We played outside, made our own fun. We didn’t need no fancy gadgets to keep us entertained. We had hopscotch, jump rope, tag. We used our imaginations. I reckon that’s what he’s doin’, in a way. Usin’ his imagination. Just in a different way than we did.
This Farfetch’d in Pokemon Go, it’s a mystery to me. But he’s determined to catch it. He’s been tryin’ for a long time, he says. Years, even. That’s dedication, I suppose. I don’t understand it, but I support him. It’s his thing, you know? We all got our things. I like my garden, he likes his Pokemans. To each their own, as they say.
He’s a good boy, my grandson. He helps me out around the house, takes out the trash, fetches me things from the store. He’s got a good heart. Even if he does spend too much time chasin’ after that far fetched bird on his phone. I just hope he don’t forget to look up every once in a while, and see the real world around him. That’s all any grandma can ask for, ain’t it?
He said this game came out in 2016, and this bird thing has been in the game for years. But some folks still can’t find it. He said it doesn’t just show up in the wild. That’s somethin’ else he said. “Spawn in the wild.” Like it’s some kinda animal. Well, I guess it is, in a way. A made-up animal on a phone.
I still think it’s a bit silly, but I don’t want to make fun of the boy. It’s important to him, so it is what it is. But I still say, it’s a far fetched idea, that there’s a duck with an onion out there somewhere!
