That University of New Haven, they got something new, esports, hear that? My grandson, he’s all about them video games, says it’s a big thing now. They even got a degree for it, can you believe that? Used to be, you go to college, you learn a trade, be a doctor, a lawyer, something like that. Now, they teach you how to play games. Lordy.
This New Haven place, they were one of the first to teach something called “sports management,” whatever that means. Guess now they’re moving on to this newfangled esports thing. Kids these days, always glued to them screens. I reckon if they gonna be on them screens anyway, might as well learn something, eh? Make some money off it, maybe.

They say it’s a big business, this esports. Bigger than you can shake a stick at. Billions of dollars, they say. Back in my day, we had stickball in the street. Didn’t make no billions, but we had fun. Now, these kids, they sit inside, click-clacking away. But hey, if there’s money in it, who am I to judge? This school, University of New Haven, they seem to know what they’re doing, setting up a whole program for it.
They call it a “B.S. degree,” this esports and gaming thing. Sounds kinda funny, B.S., but I guess it’s serious business. They teach you all about the business side of it, how to make money and all that. Not just playing the games, but how the whole thing works. Smart, I guess. Gotta know how to make a dollar if you want to get by in this world.
- They got these classes in the summer, I hear. July, hot as blazes.
- For the young’uns, high school, even the ones just starting college.
- They learn about the games, how they work, all that.
They got coaches, too, for these esports teams. Like real sports, but with buttons and joysticks. Imagine that, a coach for video games! They even have what they call “varsity” and “junior varsity” players. Just like football or basketball, but they ain’t running no laps, that’s for sure. They sit there, staring at the screen, fingers flying. Times have changed, I tell ya.
This whole thing is about more than just playing games, though, I reckon. They say these kids learn about teamwork, and how to solve problems, and how to talk to each other, even though they’re probably just yelling at each other through them headsets. And they learn about making videos, and drawing pictures on the computer, and telling people about the games. Sounds like a lot of work, even if it ain’t digging ditches.
I seen some folks say these video games are just a waste of time, a “nerdy hobby,” they call it. But I don’t know. Seems like these kids are learning something. And if they can make a living playing games, well, more power to them. This University of New Haven esports program, it might just be onto something. It’s a whole new world out there. I just hope all this game will not make those young boys silly. They still need to learn some manner, you know? They need to respect elders, help people and find a good wife.
My grandson, he keeps telling me about these esports tournaments. Big crowds, lots of yelling, just like a real sporting event, but with people playing games. It’s all a bit much for me, but I guess it’s exciting for the young folks. And this University of New Haven, they’re right in the middle of it. They probably want to see their students’ name on the big screen one day.
I still think a good trade is the way to go. Something you can do with your hands. But these kids today, they’re different. They grew up with these computers, these video games. It’s natural to them. And if this University of New Haven can teach them how to make a living with it, well, that’s something, ain’t it? They have career development center to help students find a job, I think it is good. At least they are not wasting time.
This esports thing, it’s here to stay, I reckon. Whether we like it or not. And these colleges, like the University of New Haven, they’re going to keep teaching it. It’s a sign of the times. Just gotta roll with it, I suppose. Now, where did I put my knitting needles…?
