Alright, guys, so I’ve been diving deep into Pokemon Go lately, trying to up my game in raids and battles. I decided to focus on my Metagross, since it’s a beast, but I was kinda lost on the best moveset. So, I did a bunch of digging and experimenting, and here’s what I went through.
First, I caught a bunch of Beldum. Gotta start with the basics, right? I was hoping for some high IV ones, and luckily, after a few raids and some wild catches, I snagged a pretty decent one. Thank goodness for those appraisal tools!

My Hunt For The Perfect Moves
Then came the evolving. I popped a lucky egg, did a mass evolve session, and finally got my Metagross. But the moveset… it wasn’t ideal. I got stuck with Bullet Punch and Psychic. Not terrible, but not the powerhouse combo I was looking for.
I spent tons of time reading old Reddit posts. Then, I started experimenting.
- I started by trying to get a feel for Bullet Punch. It’s a steel-type fast move, so good against fairy, rock, and ice. I threw Metagross into some gym battles and raids, just to see how it performed. It charged up energy pretty fast, which was a plus.
- Next, I wanted to check out Zen Headbutt. It’s a psychic-type fast move, so it hits fighting and poison types hard. I used the same approach – gym battles and some lower-level raids. It felt slower than Bullet Punch, but the damage seemed a bit higher in those specific matchups.
For the charged move, I was seriously gunning for Meteor Mash. That’s the legacy move, the big kahuna, and it’s a Steel-type, so STAB (Same Type Attack Bonus) is a major factor. I found out the hard way you can only get it during specific events, or with the special Elite TM.
I had a couple of Elite Charged TMs burning a hole in my pocket, so I caved and used one. Totally worth it! I tried different combinations with the Fast move as below:
- I paired Meteor Mash with Bullet Punch first. It’s steel on steel, so super effective against some common raid bosses. The battles felt quick and I have more time to try more.
- Then I tried Meteor Mash with Zen Headbutt. It’s more versatile and covered more types. But I’m still not sure.
Earthquake or Not?
I’m still on the fence.
- Earthquake is ground-type, giving me coverage against fire, electric, poison, rock, and steel.
- But It takes a while to charge up.
I kept battling, kept tweaking, and finally, after what felt like forever, I landed on Bullet Punch and Meteor Mash. It just felt right. The damage output was insane, especially against those fairy-type raid bosses that used to give me trouble. And it destroys those gyms. I used another Elite charge TM on another metagross to try Zen Headbutt, not bad, but I think I will stick with Bullet Punch.
So, yeah, that’s my Metagross moveset journey. It took some time, some resources, and a whole lot of battling, but I’m finally feeling good about my Metagross’s place on my team. It’s all about trying things out and finding what works best for you and your playstyle!
