Okay, so I decided to mess around with blacksmithing specializations in WoW the other day. I’ve had a blacksmith alt for a while, but I never really bothered to figure out which specialization was best. Honestly, I just picked one at random way back when.
First, I dug around online to refresh my memory on the basics. I found some old guides and forum posts. Apparently, there used to be a bigger difference between the specializations, but things have changed over the years.

Choosing a Specialization
I learned there are two main choices: Armorsmith and Weaponsmith. You used to have to do these long quest chains, but now, you just talk to a trainer. How easy is that?
- Armorsmith: Lets you craft, well, armor.
- Weaponsmith: You guessed it, focuses on weapons.
Then, within Weaponsmith, you gotta pick another specialization:
- Axesmith
- Hammersmith
- Swordsmith
So, I headed to the blacksmithing trainer in the main city. Just a couple of clicks, and I was officially looking at the specialization options. I already was weaponsmith, so i only needed change that subspec.
I spend sometime thinking… Axes, hammers, or swords? Since my alt is a warrior, that likes swords, I went to change to sword specialization. Few clicks and i was ready.
The Results?
Honestly, the choice didn’t feel super impactful right away. My alt isn’t max level, and i don’t have all reputations, and I’m not crafting the absolute best gear in the game. So, maybe at the very, very top end, it makes a bigger difference? I don’t know.
But, hey, at least now I can say I’ve tried to understand the system. And I have some swords to show off. Maybe one day I’ll go back and try the other specializations, just to see what they’re like. For now, though, I’m happy to be done and feel my blacksmith is ready.
