Okay, so today I decided to dive deep into Pokemon Go and really figure out this whole movesets thing. I mean, I’ve been playing for a while, but honestly, I’ve mostly just been catching ’em all and not paying a ton of attention to the battles. But I’m starting to get more competitive, so it’s time to get serious!
First, I started by just looking at my strongest Pokemon. You know, the ones with the highest CP. I figured those were the best, right? Well, turns out, CP isn’t everything.

Digging into the Details
I started poking around in the Pokemon info screens. I noticed that each Pokemon has two moves: a fast move and a charge move. And each of those moves has a type, like Fire, Water, Grass, etc. This is where it gets interesting!
- I learned that type matchups are super important. Like, a Fire move is going to do extra damage against a Grass-type Pokemon, but not much against a Water-type. It’s basic Pokemon 101, but I’d kind of been ignoring it in Go.
- Then, I discovered that some moves are just better than others, even if they’re the same type. There are all these hidden stats like damage per second (DPS) and energy generation. Who knew?!
So, I spent a good chunk of time just comparing the movesets of my Pokemon. I used a separate website to look up those DPS numbers. I’ve always loved to play games using data! It made me more clear about this game. I found a few of my Pokemon had really terrible moves, even though their CP was high. No wonder I was losing some battles!
Making Some Changes
This is where TMs (Technical Machines) come in. These are items you can use to change a Pokemon’s moves. I had a bunch saved up, so I started experimenting.
I focused on my best Pokemon and tried to give them movesets that were both strong and had good type coverage. For example, I had a really strong Dragonite, but it had two Dragon-type moves. I used a Charge TM to give it a Steel-type move, so it would be better against Fairy-types (which are strong against Dragon). I did spend a lot of time for changing movesets, I felt great after getting them optimized!
It took a while, and I definitely used up a lot of TMs, but I feel like my Pokemon team is way stronger now. I even won a few battles against some friends that I usually lose to! I had much fun during these battles.
So, yeah, that’s my Pokemon Go movesets adventure for today. It’s definitely a deeper game than I thought! Still a lot to learn, but I’m feeling pretty good about my progress.
