Okay, so I’ve been grinding away at Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2, trying to figure out which guns are actually worth using. It’s a jungle out there, and you don’t want to get caught with a pea shooter. So, I did what any sane person would do – I tested a bunch of them out, took notes, and now I’m here to share my findings.
Getting Started
First off, I grabbed all the guns I could unlock. I mean, who has time to unlock everything before forming an opinion, right? I played a ton of matches, tried different game modes, and just generally messed around to see what felt right. I wasn’t going for any scientific method here, just good old-fashioned “feel” and some general observations.

My Testing Playground
Most of my testing went down in multiplayer. I figured that’s where the real action is. I hit up modes like Team Deathmatch and Domination, because those are my go-to’s and I know the maps. I focused on the maps with longer sightlines like ‘Shoot House’ to test out the range of the guns.
The Grind
- Assault Rifles: These are your bread and butter. I spent a lot of time with the M4, because it’s the M4 and is an average balanced AR, and then moved on to the Kastov 545 and 762. The 545 felt pretty good – decent accuracy and not too much recoil. The 762 was a beast, but you gotta control that kick. The Lachmann 556 was also good, but felt like a lot of other options with its medium-high recoil.
- SMGs: For close-quarters, the SMGs were a blast. The Vaznev-9K was my favorite by far – felt like a laser beam. The FSS Hurricane was also up there, once I got used to the handling. The Lachmann Sub is also always a strong option, but I didn’t like it as much as the Vaznev. The PDSW 528 had a crazy fire rate, but it sprayed like a garden hose.
- LMGs: These bad boys are for holding down lanes and laying down suppressive fire. I really liked the RPK – it felt powerful and relatively easy to control for an LMG. The Sakin MG38 was also a monster once I got it leveled up a bit. The HCR 56 felt pretty middle-of-the-road to me. The RAAL MG was great for damage, but you can’t be moving around with it, that’s for sure.
- Marksman Rifles: If you like picking people off from a distance, these are your friends. The EBR-14 was my top pick, it’s great for mid to long range. The Lockwood MK2 was also fun, but you need good aim. The TAQ-M was pretty powerful, but felt a little slow for my taste.
- Sniper Rifles: Sniping is a whole different ball game. I had some fun with the MCPR-300, but it’s not really my style. The Signal 50 felt like a cannon but had a super slow fire rate. I honestly didn’t spend much time here – I’m more of a run-and-gun guy.
- Battle Rifles: These are like a mix between assault rifles and marksman rifles. The FTAC Recon was a beast in the right hands, but it’s not for everyone. The Lachmann 762 was powerful, but slow. And the SO-14 felt pretty good, but nothing special.
Final Thoughts
After all this, I realized a few things. One, there’s no “best” gun. It really depends on your playstyle and what you’re comfortable with. Two, some guns are definitely better than others, but even the “bad” ones can be fun to use if you’re up for a challenge. And three, attachments matter – a lot. You can turn a mediocre gun into a beast with the right setup.
So, there you have it. My totally unscientific, based-on-vibes-and-experience gun tier list for Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2. Take it with a grain of salt, and remember that the most important thing is to have fun. And hey, if you disagree with me, that’s cool too – let’s just all agree that the game is a blast, even if we’re arguing about which virtual gun is the best.
